Bid forms may be picked up at City Hall, 460 Columbia;Avenue, School enrolment steady KAREN KERKHOFF Sun Staff Slow and steady — that describes student enrolment growth in the Castlegar school district. Assistant supervisor Lach Far- rell said that there are an estimat- ed 2,472 students in Castlegar schools. “The overall thing is that the district population has shown slow growth.” Slow and steady growth, said Farrell, is preferable to explosive or no growth. “Slow growth is healthy when considering staffing and facilities. If it were explosive we might have a problem in coping.” It’s far preferable over enrol- ment statistics from 1986-1991 which showed that the district was experiencing a five to six per cent decrease. Budgets are determined by the B.C. Ministry of Educa- tion, based on head-counts, and so the increased student population is encouraging to the district “Given the fact that all budgets are predicated on school popula- tion, that is the generator.” This year there are 1,230 stu- dents enroled in grades Kinder- garten to grade six; Kinnaird middle school has 442, while Stanley Humphries Secondary School currently has 800 students enroled. The Pathfinders and the Young Parents on-line learning program have shown the most explosive growth—it has 60 full-time equivalent students—up from 50 last year. Farrell stressed that the num- bers given are only rough pro- jection and that definitive numbers will be tabulated Sept 29 as required by the Ministry of Education.
