When his finances got low he and his little dog would disappear to return with Little sacks of nuggets. He lost an eye and was left for dead during the John Cole and Henry Rose wiskey-crazed battle of 1902. Some folks will tell you the battle over money for ties started as. these men rowed south from Nakusp, to the 160 acres, on District Lot .8153, then owned by Henry Rose At that time and place, Herbert Redfern lived in a small cabin up from Henry Rose's cabin. This Henry Hese's cabin was probably built about 1887. It still stands in good repair. It is west of Donnelly's present residence. After Demars got ar Ce cund again, ne still carried his map to his gold field, but he was aging fast anc could not make the mountain trips. Mrs. Parent says "A brother and sister came from Quebec to care for him and they three, stent tne winter before his death, in the Old Bank Building built by Frank Sourne but now owned by Mrs. P. Sather in Nakusp No trace of the map was ever found. Father Jeanott prepared him for “his Journey to the land of eternal life but Demars didn't reveal to him his secret of his gold cache. He died in 1908 and lies in an unmarked grave in the Caznolic cemetery in Nakusp. THS TOM ANTHONYS In 1910 Demars district streched from the bluff south to the Louis Pabst place, now Val Hort son's. Tom anthony came up from the U.S.A. in 1901 and quite soon bought 165 acres there, the chain of land owners were, Anthony Meyers, Harry Baerg, and present owners are Betty and Jake Reiner. Tom anthony quite scon got work with the C.P.R. He owned a gas boat, set out apple, pear, cherry, and plum trees. Mrs. Anthony never liked Demars. it is possible that stories told abcut ghosts pitching bottles and pans while they cussed in both french and english bothered her. Hrs, Karstew said that for years ghosts were seen or heard all along that old trail. i myself, have heard blood curdling coyote yells, but ecyotes, I know, from that direction.
