Fishing lures were well- washed during the sail up the lake and the members enjoyed aswim and wiener roast on the beach, The highlight of this first annual Arrow Lakes Picnic Cruise was a “treasure hunt” in the water for fishing floats. The successful swimmers also won a fishing lure, fly box and fishing : During the aft a channel for: all other calls, As we use the water for pleasure we should be aware of others around us and any possible sign of trouble. The Castlegar Power Squadron will be holding its annual Predicted Log Race on the Kootenay Lake, August 7. This gives the boaters a chance to practice some of the theory learned during the win- ter Boating Course, as they predict how long it should take them to run an established course, and then actually run-it. They must consider such things as wind and current and “Mayday” call was heard and it was good to see the number of fishermen who sped over to the distressed boat. The owner was out of gas. This is not a serious situation on a calm day with other boats around, but serious accidents can occur and boaters must rely on other boaters for help. The Criminal Code of Cana- da deals with offences on the water including the failure to stop at the scene of an accident, but our own concern for our fellow sailor should be reason enough to respond to any call for help on the water. The boater in question used a smoke flare. Other means of signalling trouble are: with a light, three short flashes, three long and three: short _ (SOS); outstretched arms slow- ly and repeatedly raised and the ofan obstacle such as a crossing ferry. This year's event will take off from Camp Koolary with tt 10 am.
