When you're talking pre: manufactured homes — whether you're in the West Kootenays or the farthest reaches of northwestern B.C. — you're talking Paci- fic Homes. That's because the | longtime “B.C.-based firm has built ‘its business on dependability, quality and service, Pacific Homes is in fact a member of 4 larger family of housing manufacturing firms that includes Paeitie Truss: Ltd,“ and’: Pacific Builders | Supplies Ltd. with its head office’ -in Cobble Hill, just south: of Duncan on Vancouver. -Is- land. es, : With Ken “MeKCinnon as president, “the “Pacific group boasts three manu-. facturing‘ centrés ‘in the province one’ at Cobble Hill, another at. Langley and a third’at’ Cranbrook. As well, the c company hasa network‘of marketing rep- stretching from the Koot- enays to Prines Rupert. © In‘ ‘business: for ‘ more than ‘a’ quarter-century, Pacific: Homes offers‘ the kind of stability and sound financial base’ that home buyers need. “In this type of economic climate that’s important to a person,” explains Pacific Homes’ West Kootenay marketing” representative Jorgen Munck. Home buy- ers today want to be as- sured their project will be seen through to the final - detail. It's that kind of attention to detail and home buyers’ neéds_that makes Pacific Homes a leader in the home industry. ‘An example of the kind of care Pacific Homes takes with buyers is reflected in its sale of 10 pre-manufac- tured homes to two Indian bands in northeastern B.C. Cutting and assembling . the pieces for the. homes was routine, -but getting the houses to.the site was another . matter. were destined to. be de- livered to Hazelton end seven were earmarked for the small community. of Greenville, .80.. kilometres from the Alaska border on the banks of the Nass _ River. Getting ‘to. Hazelton wasn't much.of a problem, ae but Greenville is accessible only by logging’ road and by the river. The operation had to: be planned. with precision — there could be no coming back for for- gotten items. - ‘. The convoy had to catch the‘ tide: at the right ‘mo- ment for the barge: trans- porting the trailer loads of material ‘to navigate the shallow river. -~" Although the coast was 50’ kilometres’ away, the operation depended on a 1,8-metre rise ‘in the river’ to get through. When the trucks arrived at the load- ing site for the barge, the drivers had to manoeuvre their trucks onto a ramp slightly wider than the width of the wheels — one at a time — and make the 4.5-kilometre trip.up river to the village. There was no loading dock for the barge and the gravel banks of the river served as a roadbed. The trucks made the trip to the village without incident. Now the West Koot- enays aren't quite as in- accessible ‘as Greenville, but Pacific Homes takes the same kind of care. That care is reflected in the fact that almost all the homes sold so far in the West Kootenays have required floor plans customized. to the buyer’s specifications. And that's where: the Pacific -Homes: sloga “We feel a person should A get the home they want and they’ can’ handle: — whether it’s one of our plans or not,” Munck said: “It's ‘more: important’ to give a person what they want and what they can ‘And if the buyer can't afford it, the Pacific Homes _ sales staff help come up with a plan the buyer can afford — and is still happy with, | “We try to make sure the person gains know- ledge,” Munck explains that’s the role of the sales- men. “The really important challenge isto ‘understand what people want, need and can: afford.’ That. -means.':Pacific Homes. salesmen work on the “full price philosophy.”. “We don't give a price until we understand the “Gus tomers’. ‘nebds,”" Munck notes. ; And the price includes a full package price plus an estimate of the balance: of the on-site costs such as sewer, water, site prepar- ation, permits, etc. “The, buyer’ must be aware that the package we sell is part of his’ total cost,” Munck emphasizes, “and helping the buyer ‘as- sess that total cost is part of the work. of our’ sales als each havea minimum 12 years in the housing in- housing units tothe West. himself who joined Pacific Homes after’ moving to: Nelson from Saskatche- wan.
