Klinger, the sol- dier trying to get a discharge by, wearing women’s cloth- ing. Holleman's unit “had 16 surgeons, divided into two crews, who worked 12 hours a day. When casualties were heavy, he says the operating Toom frequently was “going full blast 24 hours a day.” “I was low key, not very military,” Holleman says. “I considered the other doctors as fellow workers, and’ we just wanted to get the job done.” Holleman said that ‘while: the TV series wandered. far afield in some of its port- rayals, the medical scenes were well done and the operating room on the TV screen was just as he re- membered it in Korea. The show also accurately depicted the differences in . military medicine between the Second: World War and the Korean War, he saya. MEANTLOSS A veteran of both conflicts, Holleman ‘said_ that in the Second World War an arter- ial, wound almost certainly » meant the loss of a limb for the injured soldier. “But, in Korea, we had training in vascular surgery and lots of men retained their legs because of: that train- ing,” Holleman said. Speed in recovering the wounded also played a big factor in Korea, he said. Many of the dead, he’ said, were men who were injured during the night, and were hard to find by the air crews. Kidney failure and shock from exposure were the big- gest cause of death in his area, he said. Holleman says he made several excursions with the helicopter crews to get a feel for what they did. Holleman had joined the Mississippi National Guard after coming home from the Second World War and re- turning to private practice. The Guard unit was activated when hostilities broke out in Korea. Suddenly, Holleman found himself in command of a MASH unit about 60 kilom- etres north of Seoul“ Although his unit was “mobile,” he says it made only one move, the “night I got there.” He said they moved up a few kilometres to provide medical support for an as- saul on the mountain called “old Baldy,” and stayed there for the rest of his tour of duty.
