AR, NEWs CASTLEC 0 cenme 3007 365 3563 Nuns help to fight poverty © VANCOUVER (CP) — Many of Vancouver's down-and- outers have turned to a group of nuns for help in the fight against poverty’s ugly offspring — hunger. For the last three decades, Sister Regina and six other elderly nuns, members of the Sisters of the Atonement, have been feeding an ever increasing number of hungry men and women outside their convent A branch of the Franciscan community, the order, totalling only 300 nuns worldwide, was established to administer to the sick, elderly and hungry. The recession persists in British Columbia and daily lineups outside the convent, in Vancouver's east-end skid row, sometimes number 1,000 people, although the average is usually about half taht. Lineups at the convent _are only a part of some ig the plight of th ds of British Columbians. MORE FOOD BANKS The province has 50 food banks — more than the rest of Canada combined. A report in June by the Social Planning and Research Council of British Columbia indicated that more than 70,000 people in the province needed handouts to ensure food was on the table each week The Vancouver Food Bank began a few years ago by distributing several hundred food hampers each month. It now routinely gives away 3,000 food hampers a month Long before food banks, however, many of Vancouver's skid-row habitues looked to the Sisters of the Atonement for their daily bread. “It (the lineups) happens in most of the big cities, although here it’s on a much bigger scale,” says Sister Regina. In New York City and Boston, and those larger cities, the lineups aren't quite as long.” LINE UP EARLY She says the hungry begin lining up outside the convent on East Cordova Street four to five hours before the doors open We always have the sandwiches ready at four o'clock If we didn’t they'd be banging on the door,” she says in a soft voice with a smile that suggests no malice at the needy’s lack of appreciation. They come in increasing numbers, are younger and now expose one of the darker sides of equality: an increasing pértentage of those in the lineups are women. “There are a lot more younger men and now we are seeing women,” Sister Regina says. They haven't been able to find jobs and are on welfare. If they get something in the afternoon (from us) it stretches their budget.” DONATIONS GROW Fortunately, as the number of people lining up outside the convent increases, so do the donations. “It's remarkable, the concern for people,” Regina. Peanut butter is one of several different spreads put on the dozens of loaves of day-old bread donated by two large bakeries. Salmon, tuna and other fish products arrive as leftovers from the federal government's inspection branch. Eggs, baloney, doughnuts and other items come from various sources, both rpivate and corporate. While the religious order gets much of the credit for the food handouts, the bulk of the work is done by several lay volunteers, mostly women, who alternate morning shifts in the convent's basement On one recent morning, as Sister Regina sat in the dimly lit study and described the smooth operation, eight volunteers made sandwiches The pervasive aroma of peanut butter filled the air as the women hurried to wrap the last of the day’s provisions says Sister HELPS 30 YEARS One longtime volunteer, Ethel ‘Kanapton, wasn't the least apologetic about the volunteers’ tendency to stretch the peanut butter “Well, it comes in 50-pound (23-kilogram) containers and it's hard to spread — so we oil it,” says the 79-year-old Kanapton, a delightful, talkative woman who has been helping in the kitchen once a week for the last 30 years. Wilson woman of year TORONTO (CP) Sandy Wilson, the British Columbia film-maker who scored a big hit with her first feature, My American Cousin, is Chate laine’s woman of the year for 1987, Wilson, 39, wrote and dir ected the semi-autobiogra phical film about an adoles cent girl growing up in the Okanagan Valley in the 1950s. The movie garnered critical acclaim in Canada and the United States and won six Genie Awards. Chatelaine editor Mildred Istona writes that Wilson “is now in the forefront of Can. adian moviemakers” and said it should be no surprise Gary Fleming Dianna Kootnikoff ADVERTISING SALES nlike so many Canadian films that have gone before, it neither has pretensions to high art nor is it a dumb capitulation to the American market.” OFFICE 365-5210 Econo CASHEL ORPHANAGE Real Santa visits ST. JOHN'S, NFLD. (CP) — The boys of the Mount Cashel Orphanage have their own Santa Claus — a mys terious, magical Santa who touches their hearts and tummies each Christmas Eve. The Santa, who began visiting the orphanage 14 years ago, always leaves the same gift: a giant cake de- livered under cover of dark- ness. “One year it was an oil rig.” said Brother Barry Lynch, superior of the reli- gious order that runs the or- phanage. “Last year it was a train engine going through a snowstorm — usually it's about three feet high and maybe four feet long. “It is quite a size.” Lynch said Santa, who waits until the boys are snug in their beds, sneaks into the orphanage in the early hours of Dec. 24. The orphanage brothers gets up early to hide the sugar-coated creation until later on Christmas Eve. “They look forward to it,” said Lynch, describing the reaction of the wide-eyed boys. “It's a big treat for these kids, they know there is somebody out there who thinks of them at Christmas time and makes that kind of effort.” HELPED SANTA Lyneh said the orphanage, n Brothers, has never tried to track down Santa. One year the night watchman actually held the door open for him but didn’t dare question the sprightly fellow. “It's the spirit of Christ- mas, the Santa Claus idea,” said Lynch. “That there really is a mystery to it all and people really do think of others.” There have been theories about the mysterious visitor. Some people believe the cake is make by a family of European immigrants who moved to Newfoundland af- ter operating a bakery in their homeland. Lynch, who has only been at the orphanage for a few years, said that theory may be right. The cake, which one year came in the shape of a snow-covered village, has European feel and flavor, he About two dozen of the or- phanage’s 65 boys remain at the home over Christmas. Some of the boys have been at,the orphanage for more than a decade. Some are orphans, but many come from homes plag- ued by problems with alcohol or money. Lyneh said a few came to the orphanage after getting into difficulty and now need a more structured environment. Regardless of their circum stances, Lynch said all of the home's residents look for ward to the cake. Cranberries a valuable fruit BALA, ONT. (CP) — Bud Rennie opens the gates of the elevated dam and cranks up the pump that floods the Muskoka peat bog. The water that poured out this week will soon wrap 17 hectares of cranberry bog in at least 13 centimetres of ice, settling on the low-lying woody vines like a protective winter coat. The Mohawk Indians of the Gibson Band near this com munity about 150 kilometres north of Toronto are the largest producers of cran berries in Ontario, says Ren nie, who manages the marsh. He likes to eat cranberries on his toast, instead of waiting for Christmas dinner to haul out the familiar red jelly or sauce. “The people in this area use the a lot for backing and for fresh fruit,” says Rennie “It’s nothing for them to take home 50 pounds.” The berries are used in relishes, ices, fruit salads, fruit molds, pies, puddings, tarts and custards. Whatever you do with blueberries, you just forget the blueberries and put in cranberries.” North American Indians took cranberries and pound ed them with deer meat and fat to make pemmican, a staple. They combined them with beans and corn and came up with succotash PREVENT SCURVY The French, who call them canneberge, served them in the navy to prevent scurvy. The Germans, who call them mooseberre, cowberries and foxberries — use them whole and cooked with wild game in sauces and spreads “It's a great fruit,” says Rennie. “You take them home and don’t do anything, and you throw them in the freezer and forget about them. They're there for two NEW IN TOWN? LET US PUT OUT THE MAT FOR YOU! years they're still fine; there's nothing wrong with them.” But, he adds, “the con sumer won't buy it as a fro zen product and we're too small (a producer) to try to promote it.” While Rennie insists Cana. dians underuse cranberries and cranberry juice, Gibson reserve cranberries probably won't end up on a Christmas platter alongside your tur key, unless you dine in a res taurant The independent producer sells to Toronto canners, juice makers and restaurant food-service companies. The remaining 40 per cent of the crop is exported to flourish. ing markets in England and West Germany. “It's a fairly good source of Rennie, estimating cranber ries bring in about $450,000 a year. The Gibson band has 250 members and about 90 people live on the reserve, which also runs a trailer park and a glass fibre manufacturing operation. GREW WILD Cranberries grew wild in the area when band members started looking for ways to make money. They have been growing cranberries mercially since 1970 and har vested the first crop in 1975. The bog yielded about com 295,000 kilograms this year. The spectacular fall har vest — which turns the bog bright red — draws a lot of attention in the Muskoka area. At harvest, the bogs are flooded to float the berries. Then a tractor churns the water to free the fruit, which is gathered up using wide, wooden paddles. As autumn nds, the bogs are flooded again to protect the vines fron winterkill. The process is less dramatic than harvest and when snow falls on the ice, the bogs will look like any other fields. When they have frozen over, Rennie and the three other full-time workers use the tractor to spread sand over the ice. As the ice melts in the spring, the sand settles on the plants, smothering insect eggs and weeds and preser ving the delicate peat base that is crucial to cranberry Power chugging new pasttime far as Canada is concerned anyway — first saw the light of day in Toronto. Mind you, Toronto has been known to take credit for all sorts of good stuff. But power-chugging? Chugging itself is known countrywide. This is the short form for chugalugging, which involves the rapid ingestion of beer — whether directly from bottle or can or from receptacles such as mugs. The idea is to di lish the one gulp. There is simple chugalugging, in which the winner is the one who gets it down the fastest. Then there is compound chugging in which the winner is the one who gets the greatest number of beers down in the shortest time. There are singles, doubles, mixed doubles and team events. Power-chugging is upon us and it is something new. It can only be accomplished with cans. First, a small awl-like instrument is required. The can is turned upside-down and the bottom is pierced with the aforementioned appliance. Care must be taken to ensure that finger or thumb is “swiftly placed over the hole. The can is then shaken somewhat. Raise the can — still upside-down — to the vicinity of the mouth and then, ly (or as as you can), release the digit from the hole and with the other hand, rip away the tab. rage in ion in [ HOME FOR SALE 3,200 sq.ft. 915 - 9th St., Castl Will accept trades $118,000 Phone 365-6691 eel LOST DOG IRISH SETTER Large male, dark red, white spot on chest.
