Ong daughter had medical reasons for needing the program while the other was suf fering from trauma from achild-abuse incident. “Childhood trauma is not buried dead, it’s buried alive,’’ she said. ‘*The younger that children deal with the problem, the less it’s going to be a problemas an adult.’ Grouwstra started the program in Perry Siding, but a fire forced the family to move the ranch further down the valley to Goose Creek. She started the program with about 35 children. The ranch was at Perry Siding for three years and has been at Goose Creek for 2 years. The program runs all day Saturday until dark. Once ihe weather warms up, sessions are also conducted after school Grouwstra works with children both individually and in groups. The children range from ages two to 19, but have been as young as 18 months. But because it’s a family program, participants can be asoldas95. There are also some able-bodied people who come to the ranch to spend time with the special-needs participants. “Any community service organization has to aweek Grouwstra explained that she doesn’t need five or six people to run a program, “‘just two or more gathered together imagreement She has both girls and boys in the program and both equally enjoy-the riding efperience. Kena-Taye Ranch receives children into the program by word of mouth The ranch has mostly pony stock to keep costs down Grouwstra said using ponies also helps people who are fear ful of horses Grouwstra explained that the human-animal bonding process isa fairly new ideain Canada She noted that horses are used because they are similar in some behavioral aspects “as humans, such as adopting unpredictable behavior much as humans do. In addition, horses have a sense of smell ‘attuned beautifully for their work with groups of people,” Grouwstra said. ‘Childhood trauma is not buried dead, it’s buried alive. The younger that children deal with the problem, the less it’s going to be a problem as an adult.’ — Jessica Grouwstra | The animals have been handpicked for their different personalities “Their sense of smell tells them what's up with a per son by scent alone even before the person touches them, Grouwstra said. The horses have also been handpicked for their life ex periences.
