Be kind to the fish you catch " What to do if you hook on to a “big one” SUN STAFF For the true sportsperson fish- ing for the indigenous White Sturgeon is exhilarating. The species, which can weigh more than 400 kilograms and reach er than three metres, is prized as a freshwater big game fish. Found in some B.C. waters, including the Columbia River, the sturgeon population is declin- ing in part due to overfishing, habitat destruction and dam con- struction and In some rivers in B.C. the pop- ulation is severely depleted. The Columbia River is a prime exam- ple of population depletion and because of this the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks is enforcing a catch and-release While anglers are legally allowed to fish for the dom harms the mammoth fish. However, Fish Section Head, BC Environment, Nelson, Jay Ham- mond said there are some points to keep in mind when catching and releasing sturgeon. + Don't play the fish an unnec- essarily long time. The longer the fish fights the rod and line the more exhausted it will be, dimin- ishing recovery chances. * Don't lift the fish out of the water while you are releasing it. While it is in the water its weight is supported; if you lift it out of the water harmful stress may ‘be placed on ligaments, muscles, the swim bladder and soft organs. This is especially true for large fish. If you take pictures of larger fish, make sure it is supported along the length of its body. + Don’t place ropes or tethers through the mouth and gills. The gills are the lungs of the fish, are delicate and should not be they must release what ‘they catch. Because the sturgeon is a hardy fish, catch and release sel- ig Of liygefish is potentially harmful and illegal in freshwater in B.C.. + If the hook is located in an area of the mouth where it is not Tasty Delites Sook Free & ir Condtioned 292 Columbia Ave. 365-7401 easy to remove, snip the line as short as possible and release the fish with the hook still in.
