Glance Take an economic lesson from Alex Tilley Most Canadians have heard about Alex Tilley and his endurable Tilley hats—thanks to an innovative marketing approach. So when the 55-year- old entrepreneur came to town recently, I asked if he manages his personal finances as successfully. “I’mrvery good when it comes to marketing bit I'm not so good with numbers,” he said. “My second wife Susan and I live in a townhdéuse in Toronto which costs $2,000 month to rent,” Tilley said. “One of my worst financial moves was getting caught in the collapsing real estate market. I guess I forgot what first goes up always comes down. “I owned a home in my first marriage, but gave it to my first wife Diane when we split up Then Susan and I thought we'd like to have a townhouse in the city and a home in the country. “But carrying the two places bled me of two full years of income. And because we'd bought at the top of the market, we had trouble unloading our homes.” al Tilley admitted he’s a risk- taker with a high debt tolerance “This time I’m putting all our savings into a resource based mutual fund that’s been growing really quickly,” he said. I’ve also borrowed more than $20,000 on a WKP teams win awards Submitted Two West Kootenay Power safety teams achieved four awards at the Workers’ Com- pensation Board Regional First Aid Competition held May 29, in Nelson First-time competitors Charlie Seamark, Lauren Moorhead, Ray Gausdal and Romae Seaman eared first place in the novice category. WKP’s senior team, made up of Wayne Swann, Su Dyer, Joe Wyatt and Mark Fish- er, took second in its category Swann was also named Best First Aid Team Captain, while Dyer earned the Best First Aider award. Both teams were coached by Diane Ferguson. Each team was tested in a mock-accident scenario involv- ing four people who were injured when the construction elevator they were riding crashed ten feet to the ground. This tested each team’s ability to decide which patients needed priority treat- ment, to determine the best method of transportation and to make use of bystanders. “It was tough,” Seamark said, captain of the novice team. “You Practice but a lot of it goes out of your head under the pressure of competition. You have to rely on your instincts to do the right thing. And it's never one individ- ual that makes or breaks it for you, it’s a team effort all the way.” Team members were also required individually to assess and diagnose injuries of victims unable to speak. “Leaming the skills and leamn- ing to use them are two different things,” Seamark said. “The competition is good because it lets you practice both. It also gives you a reason to practice and keep up your skills.” p Carl's Drugs reminds every- one to make sure that your sunglasses and suntan lotion have a high enough UV factor to protect you from the sun's rays.
