ACROSS See Answer on Classified Page Severe Water Shortage Drought Expected Here This winter's light, quickly-melting snowfall and the early spring are expected to result in the Kootenay's driest year since 1936, according to a provincial Water Resources Branch spokesman in Nelson. Tom Oxland this week said severe forest fires, a shortage of drinking water and complete lack of irrigating water could occur this summer, “There's no doubt we're in a drought condition,” Oxland said. “That's assuming we're going to have a normal dry summer, If the drought con- tinues you can sure expect low streams to be short of water in July, August and September.” « The heart of the threat to water supplies in this area is the Iack of storage facilities. While areas which normally experience water shortages, such as the Okanagan, save water from the spring, fow Kootenay communities have reservoirs. As a water controller on , the Kootenay River dams said, “If our dear God decides to let it rain a bit, the lake might get a little higher.” : While there is now enoug! water flowing into Kootenay Lake to maintain its level, commitments under the Colum- bla River Treaty require set amounts to be released to the United States at certain times of year. The most recent dry year was 1970 but then there was 80 per cent of the average snow pack in the mountains. This year the situation is already far : more serious. al problems are not ex- pected to develop until the end of July, when virtually all available ‘snow will have melted. The earlier warm weather comes to stay, the sooner shortages will develop. “It's pretty hard to pre- pare for the shortage,” Oxland , said, “because most rural the creek. There is no stream storage. It means théy are going to have to be careful how they use water. We expect to be into regulation.” The water resource branch spokesman agreed Nelson will: face water restrictions this summer. “But this year they should really be prepared to enforce them.” While problems are now on the horizon, a heavy snowfall during March ‘has prevented what could have been a disas- . ter, * i “At Apex Mountain on: March 1 there was the equiva: lent of 5.6 itiches of water,” Oxland said. “At April 1 there was 8.7 inches. You can see there was a fair accumulation in March. If we didn't get that we wouldn't be talking about 65 per cent of norma), but of 35 per cent. If that had happened it - would vhave been rather serious.” For comparison, Oxland NAIRD TRANSFER LTD.
