CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, March 31, 1977 —Doug Harvey Photo THE CHURCH BELL News and Views REGIONAL ECUMENICAL PARISH from I Overseas Aid Cut St. David's congregations have been told that the B.C. government has frozen its _Agricultural Aid Fund, which “used to match, dollar for dollar, . donations made by churches and other groups in B,C. made for self-help agricultural pro- jects in overseas countries, The Anglican Primate's Relief and the United Church World Development and Relief funds will therefore no longer be doubled by the government. As an example of how these funds were used not for charity, but to make possible the self-help of poor countries, the fund has helped provide pipes and taps for a water ~system in Malawi, farmer edu- cation in western Ethiopia, aid courses in the maintenance of water pumps in Bangladesh. The B.C. government has said they will send surplus food to the third world, but not cash. But those who know what the countries need tell us that handouts are not needed nearly so much as know-how, and ma- terials for long range pro- grams. The congregations are in- vited to write their comments on this government action to Premier Bennett, the Hon. Evan Wolfe, and Rossland-Trail MLA Chris D'Arcy. Presum- ably, if you write, it means you are a contributor to such funds, and believe ‘the government should indeed spend some of our tax money for self-help pro- jects’ in poorer countries. Good Friday Tenebrae Service congregations will take part in this service, where the ex- tinguishing of lights will drama- tically remind us of the dark- ness of our lives, for which we can only await the light of Easter morning. Ask Yourself This Good Frigay and Easter force us to ask ourselves questions. What ‘does it mean, and what difference does it make to the world, to see Jesus allowing Himself to be cruelly put to death, betrayed by his dis- ciples, asking forgiveness for them all, and putting Himself into God’s hands with his last breath? What difference has this made to the world, and what difference has it made to you? And what does it mean to see Jesus triumph over death, brought back to life by the power of God, promising to be with his followers forever? Is it not true that Good Friday and Easter are an old, old story, or life-changing good news, depending on whether or not you take seriously the story and the questions it raises? St. David's Supper Put: together a gourmet meal, a group of congenial people, warm fellowship, soft lights, and quiet background music, and you have some idea of the Fondue Supper spon- sored by St. David's Anglican Parish Committee March 19, with Jim Waldie as hed convener, Jim's’ right-hand person, On Good Friday, there will be a special service to help us reflect on the meaning of Good Friday in our ‘lives.
