Last month The Right Rev- erend Eugene Medved, Father Abbot, of the Benedictine Monastery of Westminster Abbey at Mission died, full of days and honors, and was buried in the monks’ cemetery on the green, Abbey hillside. The 11th of May was set for the election of the new abbot, for under the 1500 year Rule of St. Benedict the supreme head of each monastery is elected by the monastery for the second time this spring, the flowering shrubs and trees were still a riot of blos- som, while the abbot’s grave was a level green sward indistin- guishable, other than by a single white cross, from those of 10 of his monks who had preceded him. The qualifica- tions for the of- fice of Abbot are considerable and the responsibili- ties formidable, for this spiritual fn. a Reflections and Recollections John CHARTERS _ Rt. Rev. Maurus MacRae, O.S.B. Monastery, and took their places. He then smiled and in his usual laconic manner, thanked the monks for their confidence and said, “As you know I make haste slowly, con- sidering carefully before I move. I’m also abrupt, but I’m approachable and I listen. And you are all most dear to my heart.” Dinner was a bit later on that Monday but there was a happy feast-day hum of conver- sation (meals eee ondinari eaten in silence while one monk reads aloud) wil wine at table and the ice cream and cake of special cele- bration, served. Father Abbot Maurus is not one to be im- pressed by high office, his own or any else’s. He vanished for most of the week after the election but reappeared again on Satur- day happily working in his old job as PE. teacher and. helping mark out the courses for the Monday field day. Sun- day was a bit ofa contrast when three of his young deacons were ' ordained. and temporal master of souls. In this election there were some 16 qualified candidates but few really anxious to ac- cept the honor. However, the traditional Benedictine at- mosphere remained — i.e. if you were chosen you accepted without murmuring. On Monday morning, , the monks and the Abbot Presi- dent, Father Abbot Patrick Regan, who had come from Louisiana earlier to supervise the elections, met in the Chap- ter House, while I having ear- lier prepared a_ suitable timetable, undertook the su- pervision of the junior semi- nary, starting at eight o’clock. “When the bell tolls, bring them to the church at once:” the rector told me. “It may be an hour or it may be all day.” The boys were well be- haved, but hour after hour the bells were silent and the ten- sion increased. Finally, -at 11:50, the carillon in Pfitzer memorial bell tower began to peal across the abbey grounds and the valley beyond. A new abbot had been elected. But whom? Finally the Abbot President accompanied by Father Mau- rus (62), the new abbot wear- ing his large pectoral cross of office, and a slightly bemused expression, emerged into the urch. Up to that morning, Father Maurus, now The Right Rev- erend Father Abbot Maurus, a former lawyer, graduate from UBC and an expert also in Canon (Church) law, had been the monastery guest-master responsible only for the scores of weekly guests at the abbey. As of now he was responsible for everything at the monastery for the foreseeable future. The entire community moved slowly down the centre aisle of the church-and_ past the central altar to the head of the choir where the new abbot took his throne. Here, each member of the. community, starting with the prior and the rector, embraced and saluted him in recognition of his au- thority as superior of the by Archbishop Exner with the assistance of the Abbot, before a congregation of well over 400 friends and relatives. Life will go- on at the monastery as it has for 15 cen- turies, a living proof that there is an alternative way of life which works land prays in an oasis of quiet in spite of every- thing. The ‘candle’ burning on the hill flickered briefly a while ago, but burns now more brightly than ever. The motto “Moltos Annos’ (Many Years) on his celebration cake says it well. Father Abbot Maurus will also retain his presidential fondness for jelly beans, a good omen, and an ancient straw hat for whose replacement he is “open to offers.” Last Word: The white cross disappeared last week to be replaced by a simple stone marker which reads: Rt.
