The competition is open to all photographers and any photo may be entered so long as it has not won an award in any other previous com- petition. There will be three categories for both black and white and color photos — human interest, nature, and an open class, “All works will be judged on an amateur level, not a professional level, which is a whole different criteria,” explained Ferch, "The cri- teria for judging will be composi- tion, use of light, and technical ~ detail such as depth of field, lens selection, cropping, and fill flash, Three experienced judges have been lined up for the event. Gordon Hartley is the Okanagan/Mainline | for the N. a Association of Photographic Aris’ (NAPA); a second judge will come-. from Kelowna on the recommenda- tion of NAPA; and Helmuth Mayrhofer, of Vogue Studios in Nelson will round out the trio. The judges will rate the photos on a point system, independent of each other. Scores will then be collated “Sy vo . To make it fair to anyone who wishes to enter a photo, the size of entries will be limited to either 8- inches by 10-inches or 11-inches by 14-inches. "The reason for that is because “_in past juried salons, bigger has been better," commented 'Ferch. “We want to look for the value of the photograph, not at what it cost to produce it." A photo entry must be mounted on matt board, and have at least one matt it — or at the entrant's option, the photo may be double matted. Framed photos will not be accepted with or without glass. A photographer may enter as many different photos as he/she wishes at $5 per entry. Entry forms will be available by May 1, in Castlegar at Vogue Studios, A Taste of Art, CKQR Radio, and the Castlegar Sun, in Trail at Camera and Brothers Studio; in Nel- son at Vogue Studios, Ramsay's Cameras and Art Supplies, Profile Photographic Source, and Horizon 1Hour Photo. Entry details will be on the entry forms, said Ferch, but the salon will be-held in the banquet hall at the Castlegar and District Community Complex and entries may be brought to the hall on May 30 and 31.
