The whole energy of the United States government is bent tothe. end of ex- tending the commercial interests of that country. ~ They are overlooking nothing. The Island of Jamaica recently proposed ackhange in its tariff rates, which the ‘Americans regarded: as ag@Met..:their trade, and at once the governnient -at Ww it indicated that hii y measures would be put into effect. The newspapers of the island regard this notification ag a threat to involve the celony in’ financial and commercial rain, in view of the Cuban and Porto Rican industrial competition. Senor Domorcado, one of the leading merchants, recently said he thought the Americans did ‘not realize that the pro posed tariff is not protective, but for revenue, and that Jamaica’s foreign trade is rapidly iacreasing. American re herefore, he ders, should . be directed towards adding, rather than crushing Jamaica. _ Itisevident that from this time on big and little ‘will. be -held strictly to answer for -anything- and everything that in any way affects the people of the ‘United States or the’ commercial inter- -tereste of the country. \ - ‘The mayor and city council may pride themselves upon being business men, but.they ‘will haye hard work to con- yince the people that it is good business, ‘tour long days kept ite hands off the ROSSLAND.
