Furthermore, it is pjetty gen- erally agreed that the Arlington is the best hotel in the Kootenays. It is maintained for the comfort of the gueats and the profit of the proprie- tors, and the latter have shrewdly figured out that the surest way to make money is to look to it most carefully that their guests are pleased. They have an ever watchful eye for the little details that go to make a first-class hostlery, and the standard of the house is correspondingly high. One doesn’t need to be a millionaire to stop there, either. tf ——_ FROM THE RECORDS TRANSFERS. MaRCH 25, Black Jack, D F O’Brien to Joseph Ward. When Returning Officer Townsend closed his office last night at 9 o’clock 897 voters had registered. It is the opinion of the campaign committees that the number of registered voters will exceed 1,000 before Friday night when the list will be closed and ‘sent to the printers. If the spring thaw sets in in earnest before election day a few prospectors who are entitled to a vote may strike out for the hills to dally with the iron capping, but no one predicts d| that that number will be large. The prospects that 1,000 people will vote between the hours of 10a. m. and 6 p.m. on April 7 emphasises the fact that the $100 provided for election ex- penses to be incurred by the returning officer ig entirely inadequate. Until the list is closed on Friday the returning officer will not be in a position to formulate all his plans, but he calcu- lates that it will be necessary to have six clerks and two special policemen at least. The voters lists will be divided as evenly as possible, alphabetically, as they are at the general delivery window of a large postoffice. Two clerks will be in charge of each list, one to check off the voter’s name and the other to stamp the_ballot iven him with a private mark. Votin booths to correspond with the division of clerks will be provided for the voter, and after marking his ballot he will fold it up and walking to the rear end of the building deposit it with the returning officer, go out the rear entrance, and consider his duty ended. This method will prevent disorder and loss of time. Police officers will be on duty to keep peace, and the scrutiny committee, will have the privilege of remaining by the registry rolls and challenging any nereon they like. But the simple chal- lenge is ull they are entitled todo, As the returning stated that there will be no “rag-chewing” tolerated. If the challenged voter takes the proper oath defore the returning officer his vote will be put in the box, but if he does not it will be torn up. 18 NOT A HOLIDAY Many inquiries have been made at the office of the returning officer con-! da: al tation lines in Kootenay until the Nelson & Bedlington road is built to connect with the Great- Northern railway at Bonner’s Ferry.
