The college began the 1966-1967 school year with 458 charter students based in Castlegar and has grown ever since. Selkirk College is British Columbia’s first regional college created through referendum. in February, 1965, residents of the West Kootenay-Boundary voted to provide a quality post-secondary experience close to home. Fitting well with its rural charm, the college’s first semester opened in September, 1966 in the former bunkhouses at the Celgar Pulp Mill just outside of Castlegar.
