Drive at a smocth, steady speed. Every time you increase your speed after a temporary slowdown, a little pump inside the carburetor squirts an extra shot of gasoline into the engine. Cutting in and out of lanes is not only dangerous, but also wastes fuel because of frequent acceleration and braking. Look ahead to traffic lights. Slow down gradually as you approach a red light. The light: may change to green before you reach it and you'll save energy required to get the car in motion again and accelerate to ‘normal speed. When you do stop for the light, coasting to a gentle stop is a lot easier’ on fuel consumption, brake linings and your passen- gers’ nerves than slamming on the brakes at the last minute. The driver who is first away from every stop-light is wasting gasoline. If your car has an automatic transmission, upshifts to the more economical second and third speeds occur sooner at light throttle, With a manual transmission, upshift as soon as tho car will run amoothly in the higher gears, Don't “ride” the brakes. Slow the car by easing off on the accelerator. Don't uso the brake pedal as a rest for your left foot. Finally, don't let the engine Idle while you are waiting outside the school or supermarket. When the engine is idling and the car isn't moving, you are getting zero miles per gallon, Regular tune-up is import- ant for any car, but especially so for those equipped with exhaust emission . controls, They can tolerate less variation in carburetor setting, spark plug and distributor point gap, or ignition timing. A dirty air cleaner restricts the flow of air to the carburetor and causes the engine to run on a-richer mixture—a higher-than-normal percentage of fuel to air. The result is an increase in both fuel consumption and carbon monoxide emissions. A. com- plete engine tune-up can reduce fuel consumption by an average eight to ten per cent, and in some cases as much as 25 per cent. You will save money by getting the most out of every gallon of gasoline you buy, and you will do your bit. toward cleaning up the air. And you will be making a useful contribution towards the energy crisis, Stan Babich On Winning School Team A former resident of Castlegar, Stan Babich, who now makes his home at Cranbrook, is on the Cranbrook High School team which ap- peared recently on the CBC television program .“Reach for the Top”. : As. a member of the winning team, he will again appear on TV when the Cranbrook High School team defends its position in January.
