Day Without Art mourns dehumanizing AIDS virus W NEC joins in national day of mourning Dec. 1 On Tuesday, Dec. 1, the West Kootenay National Ex- hibition Centre is joining with other North American arts or- ganizations by participating in the Fifth Annual Day With- out Art. The national day of action and mourning is to bring at- tention to the devastating ef- fort AIDS has had on the in- ternational arts community and coincides with the World Health Organization’s Aids Awareness Day. The Day Without Art is de- signed to: * Celebrate the achieve- ments and lives of colleagues and friends while mourning the losses sustained by the cultural community. * Encourage action to ure and care for all people with AIDS. ¢ Educate the public about HIV infection. Nelson photographer Fred Rosenberg, whose exhibition, All We Ever Wanted is cur- rently on display at the NEC, is fully in support of the pro- gram of information and en- tertainment. “I want to support aware- ness of the immensity of the problem, whether it’s among artists or loggers. the more people are aware of the truth about AIDS rather than what the politicians say, that’s what’s important.” On Dec. 1, a number of the works in the gallery will be draped, information on AIDS will be available, a video on the journey of the AIDS quilt will be shown and there will be a donation box for the Kootenay AIDS/HIV Support Group. One such strip involved Charlie Brown desperately trying to fly his kite. In the first frame he is looking back with a smile on his face and calling back to Li- nus saying “I did it! I did it! This is the best day of my life!” Then, true to form, the next frame shows him tan- gled in his kite string and hanging upside down from a tree that seemed to appear out of nowhere. You guessed it, the words that came out of his mouth next were “This has been the worst day of my life,” and he added that “Absolutely noth- ing could be worse than this,” Then in the third and final frame we find Charlie tan- gled in his kite string, hang- ing upside down in the tree with a full blown expression of “I give up” on his face as he looks up into the sky just in time for the rain to come pouring down. Now, it’s one thing to find yourself in an increasingly deteriorating situation but what about the times when everything you attempt to do only complicates the situation and makes matters worse. A few years ago a lady by the name of Edith from Dar- lington, Md., found herself in one of those situations. As a mother of eight, there was little that could catch her Pulpit & Pew New Life Assembly Pastor Rankin MCGOUGAN off guard. But one Saturday after- noon as she walked up her steps and across her porch she was troubled by the un- usual silence and the absence of children in the yard. the top of her lungs “C-H-I-L- D-R-E-N R-U-N.” To which each child auto- matically picked up a baby skunk and ran to different parts of the house. ; In her desperate attempt to correct a potential problem isolated to one area of the house she has successfully ex- panded the problem to every area of her dwelling. From time to time we may find ourselves feeling very much like Charlie Brown or like Edith. Things just keep deterio- rating instead of improving and our futile attempts to im- prove the situation only serve to intensify the disaster. But take heart because it’s during those times, when ‘In a moment of desperation and concern for the safety of the children, the room and her self she screamed at the top of her lungs “C-H-I-L-D-R-E-N R-U-N.”” Entering the house she no- ticed five of her youngest chil- dren huddled intently in a cir- cle in the middle of the living room floor. Hoping to discover what was the centre of attraction before the children noticed her presence she closed The door quietly and slipped over to where they were. Much to her horror she dis- covered the children playing with a group of cute and cud- dly baby skunks. In a moment of despera- tion and concern for the safe- ty of the children, the room and her self she screamed at we're face-to-face with the re- ality of our weaknesses and eyeball-to-eyeball with the truth of our inabilities, that God’s love and power can be demonstrated most graphi- cally in our lives. We may be “hard pressed on every side, but we’re not crushed; perplexed, but we’re not in despair; persecuted, but we’re not abandoned; struck down, but we're not de- stroyed”. We need to allow Him to reveal his strength in the midst of our weakness and to trust that even in our state of helplessness we are safe in His arms. Llow to lisht a Christmas fire.
