the GST for low- and modest-
income Canadians is a credit paid

Canadians are expected to receive
about $2.4 billion in GST credit
cheques in 1991.

The basic credit is $190 a year
for adults and $100 for children

Some economists doubt that will
be the case and believe the increase
in inflation will be three percentage
points or more.

That would keep interest rates
high, the last thing the economy
needs in the middle of a recession.

Wilson cut the proposed tax rate
one year ago to seven per cent from
nine per cent after a host of groups
said the higher rate would unleash a
devastating burst of inflation.

Commons ‘in April, Liberals in the
Senate delayed the tax until now.
