The laboring people of Rozsland, whether ‘or not. they belong to an organ- ization, need not be reminded by the Recorp that there is but one course ieft them to pursue, and that.is to stand true and steadfast to their determina- tion to support.Mr. Wallace, tv a man. If they do not do so, defeat and the loss of prestage is liable to fall upon them. Tf Mr. Wallace-is defeated it can only oceur by the failure of the laboring people to hang.together. They clearly hold.the balance of power in the -pres- ent contest, and if they do not exercise it, it will-be a long time before they can again gain the confidence of their friends outside their organization. Every merchant or business man who looks to them for trade, should in this emergency lend them a helping hand and not only vote for their candidate for mayor, but talk for .bim, and without tainting this article with a threat, we can pledge such persons.a renewed and i d-friendelip and from @ thousand, hardy gons of toil. But working men who are not true to themeelves cannot expect others to be true to them, and should not be sur- prised, after election, to get the cold shoulder from their friends who suffer defeat on account of their failure to work and vote as a single man. Stand firm, stand Be trne defeated, the defeat ia equally yours, Poll for him every vote in the com-| bined organizations, and politicians, and men who only desire to use you will ‘re- ceive a leseon they will not forget. Alderman Goodeve made no friends for himself last night upon the plat- form. He demonstrated that he was a mean{notforiginal or fertile in ideas. He had nothing new to say,:nd took up} three times as much tim as Mayor ‘Wallace himself. Mr. Go.deve seemed to forget that he was only, there upon suffrage and not entitled t-hogthe time talking of trivial affairs. It was Big I, ‘and Little You all the way through with him, to the chagrin and disgust of even his friends. They Were disappointed in him, and it is strongly hinted that his committee declared off the meeting. which had been announced for tonight, because they realized that he was making votes [sr Mr. Wallace, and that it was not saie to trust him again upon the public platform. Will the church people prefer to sup- port Mr. Goodeye for mayor who says upon the public platform, that if elected he will favor keeping the saloons open on Sunday, to. a man who said. damn,” and says he will enforce the Sunday law, if electid? Itis the drowning man who clings to the straws, and nothing can be mure apparant than that there ia no senge, reason or excuse for electing Mr. Good-. eve, over Mr. Wallace, other than that ‘Mr. Wallace said “damn.” A Good Working Majority. Victoria Times. Six is a very respectable majority for @ government to.carry.on business, It igan excellent number to begin with; lor no one supposes the government ma- jority will not besubstantially increased before the session 1s a fortnight older. There is nothing that the average man or average legislature admires and prizes more than strength of character; firm- nes, fortier en re, if one chooses to put it that way; men like .to feel that for better or worse they have lenders who are atleast men, strong men with very well-defined ideas of what they are about; men witha plan with their in- domitable energy and powerful intelli- gence will work out in spite of ail oppo- sition, Whatever charges may be lev- eled against the members of the present to yourselves and to you accrue the ben- efit, for all time to come.
