Sergey Varlamov is a young hockey player from the Ukraine who can attest to their generosity and he is reminded of it every time he takes the ice for the Nel- son Maple Leafs of the Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League. Varlamov, who is 16-years-old, came to Canada in August with hopes of performing well in the Western Hockey League. But he wasn't quite ready for the rough style of the league and found himself bounced around a few other teams until he found a home in Nelson. One of the reasons Nelson was such a great fit for the budding star was the proximity of the Rus- sian-speaking community in Castlegar and area. Varlamov soon found himself comforted by people who spoke his own lan- guage and treated him as a long lost brother. It has made the culture transi- tion much easier but his hockey skills were still lacking due to some injuries and his equipment. “He had lousy equipment,” said Dan Zoobkoff, who is one of Sergey’s billets. “We were look- ing at his stuff and we thought we'd have to give him a hand.” Just Ey's CHOCOLATE & Girt SHop p Mon-Fri. 9-9 Sat.: 9 - 5:30 Sun.: 11-4 “WANTED We are looking for deserving coaches from the area to recognize through the 3M/Castiegar Sun 1995 Community Coach Recognition Awards Program. They all played a part in helping Sergey acquire new hockey equipment to help further his hockey career. Con- tributers missing are Pete Kalesnikoff, Jim Markin, Bill Kooznetsoff and Ernie Berger. The “we” Zoobkoff talks about are a large group of area busi- nesses and Russian people who banded together to buy Sergey all the best equipment Gerick’s Cycle and Sport in Castlegar had in stock. They suited him up in new gear from the skates to the shoulder pads. “We told him we're doing it to help him in his dream,” said Zoobkoff. “We said that if he makes the NHL, he should help somebody else with no questions asked. If some young kid needs help he'll give it, and he under- stands that.” Besides the new equipment, Varlamov also received free skate sharpenings from Ernie Berger at the Castlegar Bike Shop and a fitness pass for Hoot- ers from Jerry Hoodicoff. The new duds seem to fit him fine too. He scored in both the Leafs games last weekend, adding three assists on Saturday. As for life off the ice, Sergey likes the community of Castle- gar and is getting along great with the Russian-speaking community. He has seen his English improve considerably and when he’s not helping SUN SPORTS PHOTO / Jeff Gabert coach minor hockey in Castle- gar he’s spending time with the Doukhobor choir. His only complaint seems to be the NHL lockout. “It’s bad,” said Varlamov. “When I was in Ukraine, I watched NHL on TV all the time. Now I come to Canada and I can’t watch.” But thanks to the Doukhobor community of Castlegar that is the only bad thing he’s found in Canada. He is learning the lan- guage, learning new hockey skills and learning that he will always have friends in Castlegar. They played with four on Sunday against Golden, with forwards Mike Hunter and Kevin MacGillvray taking shifts on the blueline, and it seemed to work. The Rockets are only behind Revelstoke in the category of North Division futility, and they brought their road show to Castlegar Sunday afternoon. But these Rockets proved to be sur- prisingly explosive in their first two contests of the weekend. Both of those games against Rossland and Beaver Valley went into overtime with Golden pulling out a victory against the Nite Hawks. However, the two straight overtime games may have taken a little spark out of the Rockets as they fizzled in a 8-2 defeat to the Rebels. Doyle once again shone for the Rebels as did goal- tender Mike Kooznetsoff, who was called up for a couple games with the Creston Thunder earlier in the weekend. Kooznetsoff played the third period for the Thunder on Saturday, letting in one goal in the team's 12-3 romp over Quesnel, and then played the whole game Saturday which helped him improve his goals- against average to 3.64, tops in the South Division. Now that the Rebels are finally back on the scoring track, they are looking to put some distance between themselves and Ross- land. They will have a ripe opportunity to do just that this week as they take them on in two critical contests Tuesday and Fri- day. The games come just before the KUHL All-Star game being played in Rossland on Saturday and both teams expect to go into the long break with first place under their tree. Unfortunately, the Rebels will be going into Tuesday's game missing two of their all-star play- ers, Jeff Evdokimoff and Darren Pottle who have prior unbreak- able commitments. That leaves the team with only 15 players and three defensemen. “Tuesday we have a very small line-up but everybody is up and we want to win,” said Rebel cap- tain Todd Doyle. “It’s like the rivalry Nelson and Castlegar used to be last year. Everybody knows we have to win.” The Rebels will follow up Tuesday's game in Rossland with a return engagement with the Warriors at the Castlegar Recre- ation Complex Friday night, 8 p.m. sharp. It will be the last game of the regular season between the two clubs and should prove very entertaining. Rebels Ramblings: The fans of the Rebels can now breath a little easier thanks to the Sica- mous Eagles 5-4 loss on Satur- day night at the hands of the North Okanagan Kings. The loss means the Rebels KIJHL record 24-game winning streak which was established last year should stand until at least next season. Castlegar native Johnny Ray was in net and all indica- tions are he played a good game despite the loss. propane fireplaces; furnaces; sales & lation FREE Q VIST OUR SHOWROOM TODAY 1008 Columbia Ave., Castlegar 365-3388 ‘When you play on the midget hockey team in Castlegar, the two benchmarks of success are the Winter Games and the Provincial Championships. The first goal was within their grasp Saturday afternoon at the Complex, but for reasons unknown it slipped through their fingers. Each team in the West Koote- nay Region plays each other for the right to go to the Games. The team sporting the best head- to-head record in sanctioned games makes the trip to Comox Castlegar’s game Saturday ver- sus Trail was crucial because a win would likely have forced a tie between Trail, Castlegar and Nelson for the spot. Castlegar came out strong in the game surprising the Trail squad with three quick goals. Each team added one more and it seemed Castlegar held a strong 4- 1 lead. But that lead suddenly slipped away and when the ice cleared Trail took home a 5-4 lead and a trip to Comox. “We're disappointed because — They tried, but the Castlegar Midgets just couldn't shake the tight checking of Trail. we thought we had a really good chance,” said Castlegar forward Fred Jack. “It’s tougher losing the way we did though, because we were right there and we lost it. Dougie (Warner) had a great game in net and it would have been nice to win it for him.” This is not the first third period loss for the team this season. They seem to have a knack for SUN SPORTS PHOTO / Jeff Gabert letting leads slip away like a game versus Nakusp where they held a 6-1 lead going into the third only to lose 7-6. But they don't intend to pack up now. “There's the Winter Games and the Provincials,” said Jack. “Everyone is still looking at the Provincials, that's the big thing. We'll be there. We're going to the big dance yet.“ Speeding Costs Almost 8,000 Injuries A Year. pee ey “omen tart You are a RoadStxr!
