August 6, 1986 Castlegar News BUSINESS MARY KAY DIRECTOR WANTS IT ALL MONTREAL (CP) — France Briand glides around town in her pink Cadillac, listening to inspirational tapes by preachers of positive thinking The 46-year-old mother of one didn't become a senior sales director of Mary Kay Cosmetics Ltd winning diamonds, gas barbecues, video recorders and the use of the trademark pink Cadillac by dwelling on the negative. “People sometimes laugh at the pink Cadillac,” she said. “Except the men. The men understand. They appreciate all the work, the success it represents.” Briand is one of about 275,000 Candians involved in direct sales, plugging their wares door-to-door, at home sales parties and at the office for 22 different firms in everything from cosmetics to computers. About 90 per cent of these sales people are women because traditionally, products that were sold directly were household goods aimed directly at women, said Pierre La Traverse, president of the Toronto-based Direct Sellers Association. CHEAP SAMPLES Direct sellers are usually in business for themselves. They either buy inventory from the company and resell it, as Mary Kay consultants do, or they use samples and catalogues to entice customers to make orders, like Tuperware sellers. There are about 8,000 Mary Kay “beauty consul tants” or salespeople in Canada, said public relations officer Heather Green ar the firm's Canadian head quarters in Mississau But it takes a disci ai keener like Briand to make it big in the business. Briand began six years ago, holding home sales parties with two showcase kits of cosmetics and supplies. But she quickly built up a sales team which earns her bonuses from Mary Kay. Now, she is in charge of a .Aetwork of 48 consultants about 20 of whom she brought into the Mary Kay fold and she earns up to 13-per-cent commission on their wholesale orders. To hang on to her title and her cars — she has won three in all — Briand must push her team to sell $6,000 worth of produets each month. She has earned as much as $5,000 in a month, but averages about $2,000 without the bonuses. Green says Mary Kay's 206 Canadian directors earn an average $25,000 ar.nually; 12 per cent earn $40,000 and another six per cent earn $50,000. But those are the hot-shot sellers. Briand is after everything Mary Kay has to offer The Dallas-based company is renowned for its glitzy, emotional awards ceremonies where top sellers are cheered and presented with furs and diamonds on stage. “It's the next best thing to being a movie star,” says Briand. “The most they have to give, I want it. The flexibility of direct sales attracted Donna Tziritas, a mother of a two-year-old who started selling Tupperware three years ago, when she grew dissatisfied with her job as an auditor and wanted more money. Tziritas, 33, is now a Tu are manager. She had to recruit five new dealers which entitles her to the use of a fancy car and company-paid bonuses based on the combined sales of the 25 dealers on her “team.” “I wanted to be able to have both a career and a home life,” said Tziritas, who works 35 to 40 hours weekly. She estimates that her annual income in 1983 was $20,000, while this year she expects to earn $50,000. - Calgary: City in trouble CALGARY (CP) — Is Cal- towers Bankers Hall project people in the Stampede city The Calgary Inter-Faith gary headed for another re cession, the likes of which gripped the city’s energy based economy in 1982-83? It depends on who you talk to and what statistics you look at. Major Ralph Klein admits the city is in trouble because of the sharp drop in oil prices over the last few months, but says there are some positive signs. “There are people who are taking advantage of this . economic interruption ... to plan and build for the future,” Klein said in an interview. Calgary's planning com and expansion of three shop ping malls. Trizee Corp., a developer involved in two of the pro hasn't made a firm nm on whether to go ahead this fall as scheduled, but Ron Ghitter, executive vice-president of develop. ment, is optimistic. “Calgary is here to stay,” Ghitter said. “We've had cycles like this before, but we're looking at the long term.” Klein takes heart in the fact an April census showed Calgary grew by more than 15,000 people in the past year. But more recently moving have seen are in dire straits. Thousands in the oil and industry have been laid BEF since prices started to ynge at the beginning of dhe: year. One car dealership has offered “layoff insur- ance,” — a sign of the times. 3:More than 47,000 Cal- garians are collecting unem ployment insurance. Canada Employment processed more than 8,000 new applications for UIC benefits in June, a 39-per-cent increase over dune 1985. In April of this year there were more than 11,000 new applicants. Foodbank is doing a brisk business. The food bank started a new distribution process in June, sending out more bulk orders, because volunteers were becoming too “burned out” filling ham. pers, said spokesman Carl DeLine. In, 1984 the monthly aver age-humber of people being served by the food bank was just ever 1,000. Visitors flock to Canada 5.8 million visitors flocked to Canada during the first six months of the year, Statistics Canada said Tuesday, the highest influx since 1972. The January-to-June fig- ures are for visits to Canada of one night or longer. “It looks like a boom year ish Columbia for said Paul Paradis, a Statisties Canada’s travel ex- pert. “But as far as the rest of Canada is concerned it’s still up in the air because July and August .are normally the peak months for visits, es- pecially from the United States.” Expo 86 is credited with being the big attraction in British Columbia but it re-# mains to be seen whether the world’s fair will lure enough visitors to surpass the record 15 million that came to Canada in 1967, the year of Expo 67 During the first half of the year 5,766,755 non-residents visited Canada, 16 per cent more than during the same period a year earlier. All but the United States. Visits from the United States and from other coun. tries hit their highest levels since the early 1970s. In addition to Expo 86, the relatively weak value of the Canadian dollar and the terrorism threat abroad are credited with giving the $20. billion-a-year tourism indus. try a boost. Government and industry are hoping that those factors will help reduce the tourism deficit for Canada.
