F Her strip of backyard in downtown Toronto was just that. A strip. The back end served as her children’s basketball court, the middle was grass and alongside she tried to cultivate some type of garden — mostly to no avail because of poor soil and too much shade from a gigantic weeping willow tree. Then her children grew up and Harris found herself dreaming of the strip back of the house as a graceful oasis containing a variety of unusual plants. 0 Down 0 Interest Don't Make A Payment Until March 1991 ... Why don’t I do it?” A chance meeting with award- winning photographer Tim Saunders, an old colleague from Harris’s days as a journalist with Maclean’s magazine, begana three-year cross-Canada safari by the pair ‘‘scouting out’’ in- divudual gardens, plants, different soil and shade conditions. While Saunders captured some of Canada’s most beautiful gardens on film, Harris talked to their creators as well as to botanical experts in each province. The result is a guide to over 300 plants that can thrive in different regions of the country. “When you talk gardening in Canada you talk regional,’’ Harris says. She adds that gardening is dic- tated by the quality of light and shade more than anything else. “On the West Coast they have this kind of pointy problem,”’ Harris says. “They have spiky spruce trees which give a different kind of shade to their gardens. “*Here in Ontario we have a very dappled shade as they do in Quebec. And yet in Alberta, they don’t have any shade at all.
