1S Seen as being socially acceptable and that which is morally corrupt. Over the years, the definition of propriety has been subject to a constant revisational process which some times makes the “difference between right and wrong seem somewhat blurry. It is for this reason that most of us see society as a complex and perhaps confusing place Society tells tales of the “good old days when everything was black and White, there was discipline, there could be no debate over what was right or wrong; it was understood that the youths did what was expected of them by society. Howe ver, tumes. change, and with the times; so must Society's expecta tions and society itself. With new controver Sial issues presenting themselves daily today’s teens must not only make it their responsibility to educate themselves about topics like A.I.D.S., drugs, pre-marital sex etc. but must also take this information and make educated choices in hopes that their information doesn't steer them wrong Therefore, where discipline and control once reigned freely, now youths must take control in choosing their way of life A once popular way of being, abstinence is all but a thing of the past; in the present day and age this practice is thought to be archaic and out of date by many of today’s teen. Today the popular choice is not absti nence, but rather the opposite. It could be argue that television and the onslaught of a more liberal view or \ in the media and in music may be responsible for this generally new age” attitude However, those adoles: cents who participate in pre-marital sex now face more potential threats than ever before A.1D.S.. amony count diseases, is the most re¢ an already dangerous practice s other venereal emt development in with their sexual freedom by choice, they must choose between Carlson's Corner AN safe sex and bla tant igno rance of the accepted f ce Dy Society's moral laws t he use of condoms as s of prevention has but in the past few ironically - has s Dattle, producing programs pro- use of condoms joined th commercials tiv moting s x wend of using condoms Protecuon and prevention seen »t these efforts, there are those < tO Nol (oO protect themselves in f responsibility because condoms and other pre ventive measures are not fail-safe, there are sull those of us who have chosen to abstain The Castlegar Sun art one form pre-marital sex; morality plays little or nO part in present adolescent life, rest assured that is does Drugs and alcohol are yet another obstacle to be overcome by today's youth, and yet again, television plays a large part in aiding this progressively acute social disease Drug 1 alcohol abuse is slowly being abated ing the two most powerful weapons of all education and information Perhaps even better is that most adolescents are learning to choose designated drivers on the road Regardless of the fact that most adolescents are still under-age, some choose to drink on 4 regular basis. Again, there are those of us who abstain completely from the consump- tion of drugs and alcohel in any variation For those who choose to consume drugs and narcotics, it’s illegal at any age and most adolescents discourage this abhorring prac- lice as being socially disgraceful When you hear of grotesque examples of adolescent conduct, remember those of us who not only disapprove of this action, but try in our own way to do something about it Dan Carlson, a recent graduate of Stanley Humphries Secondary School, will be a featured columnist in The Castlegar Sun hoping to provide readers with an insight into modern adolescents by dis- cussing the daily dilemmas presented to them.
