Selkirk College is currently looking for families in Castlegar to billet Japanese students during this sum mer’s language/cultural tour, Studen- ts attend classes each morning, they catch a special college bus that tran- sports them to and from campus, and afternoons are often occupied with cultural or recreational outings Philomena Archambault, the college's Homestay coordinator, said this year’s schedule has been relaxed to allow host families more time with their student visitors “We also scheduled several events that involve both the students and the Homestay families,"’ she said Homestay families receive remuneration from Selkirk College to cover food and other expenses. “Participating families receive $325 per student to cover routine expenses and to help of fset food costs."” Bobby said the Japanese students quickly gained an understanding of the English language. “Each student brought a Japanese English dictionary which helped them converse with us. Of course you reduce your conversation to the basics, but each of our students made a real effort to converse in English, and by the end of the three weeks, there was a Castlegar Sports Centre — Fishing Rod & Reel Combo’s / Moke 205: All Ball Equipmem = /’ Bats, Gloves, Balls, Etc. ee % Bobby said the interests shared by the Japanese boys and her sons in cluded rock and roll music, Nintendo video games, and athletics of all kinds The Metges, too, said they had a thoroughly enjoyable and interesting experience with their Japanese guest Their student had no English speaking ability when he arrived in Castlegar “We got along with the use of sign language and lots of patience,” said Metge. She remarked that the Japanese are extremely respectful and polite, but in a short while came to regard Fran and Pat as his “Canadian parents."" Robin Bobby explained how easy it was to begin considering her Japanese visitors a part of the family “Our billets cleared the table after meals and made their beds every mor- ning,” she said. **Just the same as bex= pect my own boys todo."" When asked about the eating habits of the visitors, Bobby said her guests enjoyed everything they were served “They really liked beef, because in Japan it’s so expensive they don’t eat it that often.” Metge agreed, saying’ that a wiener roast over a bonfire went over very well, since that was something the Japanese had never done before. “At orientation meetings we were told to serve Canadian food, and not to try and cater to the Japanese palate, because they were here to experience Canadian customs and lifestyles,” Bobby said. She added that at orientation she was told not to be surprised if her students didn’t have much of an ap- petite because of the néW foods, and the meagre heating habits of many Japanese. This proved not to be the case with her two boys. ‘They ate like horses,"’ she said Metge, on the other hand, noticed her visitor wasn’t eating much at meals, and when asked about it, ex: plained he didn’t eat great amounts ot food, and also found the whole-grain bread she used to make his sandwiches hurt his teeth. His appetite improved once she changed toa softer bread Both Bobby and Metge were struck by the deep attachments formed over the three week duration of the Homestay “lt hardly seems as if three weeks is long enough to get to know someone very well, but at the airport we cried, and saying goodbye was hard,"’ said Metge “The parting at the airport was awtul,’’ Bobby agreed. She had to go to work right atter the plane left and she cried all day “I's amazing how attached you get in only three weeks," Bobby said The families continue to get cards and letters from their students of last summer, They write a couple of times during.the year and send cards at Christmas. ‘Hosting international students is very worthwhile,"” said Bobby, *‘even if there’s a slim chance of ever seeing them again. Nothing but good. can come of opportunities to ~bridge cultures.”* Those interested in bringing a bit of Japan into their homes trom July 19 to August 10 are urged to contact Ar chambault at Selkirk College's Castlegar campus. —— { Don't forget. .. that Special Grad or Dad!
