It will be seen by aletter from eur London correspondent that the share- holders in the British American Corpor- ation are looking for a dividend, and think that Hfteen months is long enough to wait. The Recorp has expressed the hope that company would be more com- municative with the press, and enable it'to keep the general public posted con- cerning the general progress of develop- ment work, but the management has chosen another course, which we think not a good policy. - ake newspapers pub- SMELTING LEAD ORES. The mines of the Slocan district have shipped, so far, this year ore of the value ofthree quarters of a million dollara, which is at the rate of three and’ a. half million dollars for the year. Ninety per cent. of this ore will be smelted in the United States, which means that a 109- ton stack will be kept running every day in the year on ore mined in the Koot- enays. A:-100-stack kept running atead- ily means a disbursement of $100,000 annually for wages, coke, coal, and other supplies, all of which can be procured right here in Kootenay. Then, any leg- ielation that will uid to bring about the smelting of silver-lead ore in Kootenay should be hastened.—Nelson Tribune. The only legislation that can make it ble to smelt the silver-lead ores ofthe Siocanin British Columbia, or Canada is a law which will keep out ar- ticles manufactured ‘from'lead and en- courage such manufactures to be estab- lished on this side of.the line. ‘The fact that it costs more to ship the bullion from 2. ton of ordinary Slocan lead ore to the New York market than it does to] & ship the ore itself to an American smel- ter where New York prices are paid for both the lead and silver, precludes the smelting of such ores in Canada, The|# reason that Américan sxmelterscan af- ford to pay New York prices ia that the Slocan ores are valuable to them as flux in smelting their dry ores. Then again the duty on bullion is 2¢ centaa pound, while the duty on the lead in the crude state is 11g cents a pound. There 1s no use in newspapers prating about any other kind of relief for there is none. Canada cen furnish a market for about 27,000 tons oflead pipe and other arti- cles manufactured from lead. That], would make it possible to smelt 60,000 tons of the Slocan lead ores in British Columbia, which would be a big stride teward the condition so devoutly to be wished. Alter the manufactories were once establiehed in Canada there seems to be no reason why they might not enter _ the markets ofthe world with their _ Product, A Canadian mint, would help out some, butit would only bea factor in helping tomake the silver mine- profitable. The silver would be worth sa much more in Canada -as it costa tu send it away to be coined and the cost of returning the money after it was coined. This is the proposition in a nutshell. ‘We must manufacture the lead at home, and in order todo so foreign competi- tion must be kept out with s high tariff, A telegram from Toronto dated March 17 tells a strange story of a case which has baffled medical skil: and experience. David Lewis Custman was.a few daye before a vigorous man of 21; Nowhe isa corpse. Suddenly ox the 13 Custman’e nose began to bleed and continued un- til the morning of the 16th, wena sud den change for the worse took place. the blood oozing from every pore of the un- fortunate patiente body. About three hours before death Custman became un- conscious becauge of weakness aid re- muined go till the end. Thus it ap- pears that the wise men continue to find new eubjects to interest them. Under the head of ‘One More Less,”’ the Nelson Tribune says: The Golden Miner is a corpse.
