Four Funniest Words: Henny Youngman, a 72- year-old comic with even older kes, is bowling over another eneration and loving it. ‘Tm really catching on, jokes. But I can't explain Even though people can scatch his act free almost every “week on television, Youngman jacks audiences in wherever he jays—nightclubs, colleges and “places like ChicagoFest, where “he was billed for three nights in arly August. Very simply, Youngman akes people laugh with one- ‘liners and a deadpan but shot- igun-fast delivery. That Was No Siren, That Was My Boyfriend Mary Jane Williams offer- ted police an unusual excuse ‘when they finally stopped her ‘after a lengthy chase at speeds p to 70 miles an hour. She told them that she had ‘assumed the wailing sound of ‘the sirens was the screaming of her boyfriend, who had been ‘clinging to the luggage rack of ther car since she had driven off ring an argument. “Doctor, my foot hurts... So limp," he told the Chicago- Fest audience with his trade- mark violin in hand. Youngman was born in London, grew up in Brooklyn, got his start selling old jokes on cards while a printer and won national fame as the comic on the Kate Smith radio show in the late 1930s, + He talks about politics: “Why is everybody so mad at President Carter? He hasn't done anything!" “President Carter does the work of two men—Laurel and Hardy.” ~* What's his favorite joke? That's no contest. “The four funniest words in the English language,” he said, “Take my wife, please!” Sadie Youngman, his wife of SO years, doesn’t mind, She takes the ribbing well, Young- man said, Mention of their recent wedding anniversary was an excuse to launch a dozen jokes about matrimony. “Imagine, I've been mar- ried to the same woman for 50 years. Where did I go wrong?" “I've been in love with the same woman for 50 years and if my wife finds out, she'll kill me.” “Last week my wife went to the beauty parlor and they charged her $50, And that was only for the estimate.” How does he feel about the current crop of young comics? “I love ‘em all,” he said. But his favorite comic is still his old friend, Milton Berle. He and his producer son Gary plan a film entitled Take My Wife, Please, a story of the comic's life and work. Young- man also is planning a book. Due out soon, it will be full of “family fun" and entitled Big Blue Bamboozles. “I couldn't retire. Retire to what? I don't fish or play golf. She said, “No woman ever enjoys ex as much as a man does and she never will.” How dare she speak for me? I enjoy sex as much as my husband and have never had to fake it to protect him from feeling inadequate. Also, “knowing that he is satisfied" is not enough for me. Maybe I'm abnormal or selfish but I want what is rightfully $ mine. Maybe if more women would adopt a positive attitude toward sex and not settle for play-acting there would be fewer frustrated wrecks around. ‘ —Enjoying Life In Tennessee { Dear Ten: I'll go one step further and say if more women would be open about what they want, need, like and feel, they'd have better ; love relationships with their husbands. Like everything else, it ; takes working at if you're going to get it right, . .o8 , Dear Ann: I would be very grateful if you would tell the world what you think of people who pass on other people's letters. I am not referring to literary gems or anything of historical significance. These are just plain ordinary letters of a personal nature. Recently a friend told me at a party that a mutual ! acquaintance had sent her a letter I had written several weeks ago + and it was “so interesting.” I was horrified. I can't remember what was in the letter but I certainly did not intend for it to be read by anyone else. This sort of thing could lead to misinterpretation, gossip, and a whole lot of trouble-making: dust yesterday it happened again. Another friend called to tell me how much she enjoyed the letter I had sent to “Mrs. J.” I don’t know how widespread this custom is but please try to curb it. On the other hand, here is one letter I hope you will pass on to your millions of readers. —Private Pen Dear Pen: Passing ona personal letter without the knowledge and approval of the one who wrote it is a breach of confidence. It also shows a serious lack of judgment and in some cases is illegal. If you are carrying on a running correspondence with the two women who did this, by all means let them know at once that your letters are not to be shared with anyone. P.S. If you have anything +.of a persona! nature to relate, use the telephone. B * 8 6 Dear Ann: We are 12 years of age and‘do not want to die young. We take the bus to school. Our bus driver is a woman. She is a nice lady but a rotten driver. Once she drove off the road and destroyed some private property. We hate to look out the window because she comes so close to hitting other cars. Several kids have complained (ineluding me) but our parents won't do anything. Please help. This is an emergency. Waiting For A Wreck Dear Waiting: When this letter appears in print take it to the school principal and tell him (or her) you wrote it. Ask the principal to have the bus driver followed for a few days. If your complaint is valid, something will be done. I hope. “ 6 « Dear Ann Landers: I was offended by your use of the word “gypped” ina recent column. It is a racist remark against Gypsies. Or didn't you know? i —Carol Verdun, Publisher Of The Independent, Elmira, Ont., + Dear Publisher: I checked the derivation of the word "gypped” and + you are right. It is a slang expression which means “to swindle or cheat”. The word grew out of the frequency with which some gypsies engaged in dishonest acts and then mo’ I apologize to all honorable, law-abiding Gypsies, and thank you for calling it to my attention.
