ROSSLAND EVENING RECGRD!\ROW'S NEST PASS NEWS BY HEER C, SMITH, Publivhed every dty (exzept Sunday) and Weekly DAILY One Yn on Advance One Yent, in advane Six motiths, im advance Slagle copy. “TUESDAY, JUNE 15. 1897. MUST HAVE WHEELS, . The Morning Mistake’s fake tele- gram from Spokane in reference to the conversation which took place between the mayors of Rossland and Spokane is ridiculous. Alderman Fraser, and the editor of the Recorp held receivers and heard the exchange of congratulations, which were as published in last even- ing’s Rgcorv., The following, which “a3 printed in this morning’s issue of our contemporary would indicate that the Spokane correspondent had wheels, as well as the management at this end: “Mayor Olmstead, through the man- ager’s private phone, carried on the fol- lowing one-sid conversation with Mayor Scott of Rossland: ‘Hello! Is this Mayor Scott! This is Mayor Olm- oad. Thank you. Ihave no doubt it niu be. I wish to congratulate you, ——— The Morning Mistake is holloing for the police again. This time the police is demanded for the purpose of keeping order atthe baseball grounds. If Spo- kane rings in another “sure thing’? um- pire, it will take more than an ordinar detachment of police to protect him. It is claimed that Spokane stole the game - Sunday by the assistance of the umpire, His decisions were so rank that the baseball cranks hecame frantic, and anv lover of the game would justify the kickers in doing what they did. The ercwd is more apt to stay away’ on ac- count of dishonest playing, than on ac- count of the complaining of it. ——_—— Rossland merchants and propert owners should be alive togthe necess of building trails and roads to outly ing mining camps. Today a great deal of trade which naturally belongs to Ross- Jand is going elsewhere because there are not good trails and roads to mining camps which are nearer Rossland than any other supply point. Nearly all the trade of Sullivan and Murphy creeks and the Burnt Pass district is going elsewhere because there is not a good trail to Rossland. This is no small matter and shoulc be attenden to at onve, The government will not be easily in- duced to assist Rossland in building a trail to Sullivan and Murphy ereeks, be- cause these sections already have an outlet tu the Columbia river, so if Rossland wants this trade she will probably have to build the trail. There are no doubt, many interested in the mines along the route that the trail would have to be built, who would as- sist in building it. Now is the time to see what can be done and do it. ———EE CATHOLIC FAIR TONIGHT. All Sorts of Tempting Things Will Adorn the Many Booths. The Impcrial block, where the sisters will hold their fair at 7:30 this evening for the benefit of the new hoepital, was a busy place this forenoon. Uhe Duke of Devonshire, president of the British Empire league, made an ad- drees. After declaring the objects o the league he said: ‘There never was a period in our history when the colo- nies and dependencies filled 30 large a place in the thoughts of the motherland as they do now. While it is too much to say thut the coionies occupy the at- tention of the statesmen to the exeln- siun of more domest’c matters, there is something in the air; something which, if 1 am not mistaken, is growing into a great and irresistible force, speaking to the minds und hearts of the People and telling them that hey are citizens of a reater state than that contained in the hittl- islinds in the northwest of Euro, “I am sorry to say that I am old enough to remember # very different siete of public opinion, which I believe as due to such distinguished men as Cobden and Bright, and admiration of the United Statesuf Ameri That ad- miration was admirable in "itself, perhaps at that time was somewhat ex- aggerated and misdirected as a guide for our reijations with our own colonies. We were at that time told that while we should endeavor to avoid the mistakes which lost us the North American colo- nies and that above all we should never again be guilty of attempting to retain our colonies by force, yet we might com- placently look forward to the time when Tuomas Buownier & Co, | wi —o— — ARCHITECT — NEXT DOOR TOY OILY HOSPITAL Rossland, E, S.
