YENSCOLD NTOFE ERVE 3043 “Uo *AIDUOIES “8s “HON ctlemeuy Pulpit and Pew By Pastor DONALD W. REED ~ I was chatting, with a couple of fe re- _ We have built our own ti cently. We discussed a number of matters. One of them was the rapid growth of some of the sectarian bodies on the current religious scene. T ventured a point of view. My chief concern, I said, was not the escalating popularity of some.of the cult and/or counter- culture groups, but the failure of the traditional Christian com- munity to penetrate our con- temporary culture. As Christians we ridicule those devout souls of the early church who buried themselves in monastries. We ask how they could reconcile their withdraw- al from the world with their to lize the call them church- es, ecient whatever—and en- close ourselves within them. We have created spiritual ghet- toes where we enjoy ‘fellow- ship’ with a little closed com- munity of like-minded folk. Well have we been called a holy huddle, unable to communicate in the language of’ the world, unwilling to ‘step out into the main stream of life. If one thing characterized the ministry of our Lord, it was His constant association with sinners, an association. which incurred a great deal“ of criti- cism. But as He could not remain aloof if He was to bring the message of salvation to world, We are quick to denounce their inconsistencies but ob- livious to the fact that we have evolved our own brand of monasticism. We too “have fostered isolation. We have become so involved in our churches and so engrossed with our fellowships that, like the early monastries, we have failed to maintain a vital .witness to the world. no more can we, To bury ourselves in our churches is to defuse the dynamic of Christian mission. One of the most subtle shapes of modern monasticism is the frantic pattern of activity to which many churches have fallen prey. It fills our church bulletins with announcements but somehow it fails to fill our church pews with n‘--v believ- ers. And in the bargain it stunts spiritual development, robs us of Bible study and prayer and provides a wonderful escape- «mechanism by which to evade our responsibility to go into the world and witness, One of the most deplorable results of this activity has been the trend to measure an indi- vidual's spirituality by his schedule of Christian activities. The more hectic it is, the more spiritual he must be. The world today is full of lonely, frustrated, desperate persons waiting for someone to offer them some real spiritual: help. Where, then, are the Christians who are willii step out of the shelter and warmth of the church to bring such persons to Christ? Our Lord. told us that Christians are light and salt. The role of light and salt is to penetrate and to transform. Light and salt were never meant to be sealed up in a cosy little sanctuary. Isn't it time we got down off our comfortable pews and headed for the arena? Isn't it time we abandoned our reli- gious cloisters and moved into C. C, LENFESTY & CO. Creator, but also demon- strates the way in which he can be faithful to it. To understand “The Hid- den Words" one must appre- ciate the dual nature of man, namely, the association within him of two opposite forces, the spiritual and‘ the physical, the soul and the body. The soul originates from the spiritual worlds of God. It is exalted above matter and physical kingdom: The indivi- dual comes into being when the soul, emanating from - these spiritual worlds, becomes asso- ciated with the embryo before birth. The condition of the soul after death depends upon the extent to which he has acquired divine virtues in this: life.» - The soul can take with it only good qualities to the next world. It cannot take bad ones as bad is only the absence of good. The chief aim of Baha'u'llah in “The Hidden Words” is to detach man from this mortal world and to protect his soul from its greatest enemy, himself.
