By DIRK ZINNER, Pastor + Seventh-day Adventist Chureb _ EASTER: AND CHRIST % “He is risen, he is not here” Mark 16:6. Asa child, to me the word 'Raster" meant brightly-col- bred~ eggs, jelly beans, choc- Dlate rabbits and the asso- Siated egg hunts, As I grew up I heard about “hot cross buns,” ashes, Lent, Mardi Gras, and sunrise services. In church I'd hear a sermon on the resurrection of Christ., and I wondered what all of this had in common. : As I grew older and began o study some of these hings, I came across some ather: shocking information hat must cause a sincere Christian to ask some serious questions and make some de- ided changes. ; One discovers that the fabbit was (and still is) a xommon symbol of ‘Teproduc- tion and fertility in ancient agan rites..The sun was ‘worshipped as the god of light, heat and growth; and pagan services were done regularly at sunrise. What these and other pagan forms have to do with Christ should cause one to seriously question what else has entered traditional Chris- tianity that is pagan and un- scriptural, (Read Revelation 18:46.) There is no record of the observance of the Easter fes- tival in the New Testament or in the writings of the Apostolic Fathers, So how did Easter become Christian? In the great apostasy that entered the teachings of the Scriptures, the pagan ser- vices and rites gradually en- tered the “Christian” church. Easter was a pagan festi- val:long before Christianity ‘andthe New: Testament church even existed. It an- ciently commemorates the Friday death and supposed Sunday resurrection. of Nim- rad, the false pagan saviour. There is not a single word in the Bible telling us to observe Easter. The Bible does, however, ‘clearly warn against following the ways of the heathen (Jeremiah 10:2, 3); and any encyclopedia will tell you that Eester is a pagan festival. While the’ Bible says noth- ing about Baster, it does say a lot about the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus (e.g. Matthew 27, 28; Mark 15, 16; Luke 22-24; John 19-21). This event -bears much thought and reminding in our ‘hearts and minds, as the gift of eternal life and the entire plan of salvation is ‘empty without it; for as ~Jésus said, “I am the resur-* rection and the life; he who believes in me . . . shall live” John 11:25. Dominion, raised their prime lending rates Thursday, re- Mecting North America’s trend to higher. costs. A’ similar increase in the “primé rate — interest banks charge on loans’ to their toprated corporate custom- ers — was announced Wed- nesday by the Bank of Nova Scotia only hours after the Bank of Canada rate rose to 27.16 per cent from 16.94 per, cent, the fourth week in a row that the trend-setting rate has moved up. Canadian ‘interest rates have been under pressure to move higher in sympathy with increases in the United States, Interest rates there have been edging up, with some major banks raising their prime rates this week to 17.75 per cent from 17 per cent, | crete NTO rnp GR ee OI OPEN.
