He said the Aquanauts re- alized the Neptunes would be tough to beat at home, so ex- pectations of finishing first weren't high. “We didn’t go expecting to win,” he said. “Nelson has a pretty good club this year.” Carew said the team’s suc- cess was linked to the younger swimmers, like gold medal winner Adam Kristian pleased with the Adam Kristian younger kids,” he said. “There were a lot of personal best times.” But as happy as he and coach Wendy Pilla were with the younger swimmers, Carew said they were less than im- pressed with the more senior Aquanauts. “They didn’t swim up to Creston gets Fernie NEWS STAFF Although the Kootenay In- ternational Junior Hockey League will lose a potential franchise next week, Vince Morelli won't lose any sleep. “I don’t think it’s bad for anybody,” the KIJHL vice- president said Tuesday. Tuesday, officials from both the KIJHL and the Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League will meet in Cran- brook to offically transfer Fer- nie’s RMJHL franchise to Cre- ston for one year. It was originally thought that a KIJHL team would be moving into Creston next sea- son. But when Fernie asked for a one-year leave of absence, RMJHL expansion co-ordina- tor Ed Mountain said it would be easier for Creston to take over an existing team. j “This way they have a set of players,” he said. Mountain said the league will monitor the situation in Fernie this season in the hopes of returning the Ghost Riders to their home. “This way, if they want to come back into the league, Genuine Mazda Parts & Accessories Specialized | jazda VIE SURROUND YOU Service WITH SATISFACTION ‘a CASTLEGAR #mazpa 713-17th St., Castlegar DL. 7956 CALL NOW COLLECT 365-7241 MAZDA— IT JUST FEELS RIGHT! their potential,” he said. “About a third didn’t perform they way they should have.” Although he acknowledged their victory, Carew said the some 20 additional swimmers the Neptunes had out was the difference, something he didn’t expect to see again. “They'll have a tough time geting kids like that out for fu- ture meets,” he said. In all, Aquanaut swimmers brought home 12 medals, in- cluding two gold and four sil- ver from Nelson. Carew thinks Castlegar will build on that as the squads go toe-to-toe all year. “It will be close,” he said. “We usually duke it out with them all year.” Meanwhile, the Robson River Otters picked up a coup- le of medals at the same meet, bronzes to both Kristy Verigin and Tara Paulhus, and fin- ished sixth in the nine team meet. franchise they’re welcome,” he said. Morelli said the move to Creston works well two ways. First, it would give the Fer- nie executive a chance to get their hockey affairs in order. Second, the interest created in Creston during the season could see an expansion team set up if the Ghost Riders re- turn to Fernie. “It could be enough to get a team into Creston,” he said. Creston’s decision leaves the KIJHL with six teams in the West Division, while only, three sit in the East Division. Wi Shortage of manpower keeps the Dexter’s Dynamos on the outside looking in for first win NEWS STAFF With most West Kootenay Men’s Soccer League teams in or around the midway point of their schedule, Mario Chaves says the same thing still continues to dog his squad. “The problem is we’re hav- ing a tough time getting a full team out,” the acting coach of the Dexter’s Dynamos said Tuesday. With coach Ed Chaves overseas, the Dynamos lost for the fifth time in seven games Sunday, 2-0 to Nelson Savoy. The win leaves Savoy undefeated in seven games, while the Dynamos still search for their first win. Chaves said the Dynamos have been without a complete squad since an opening game 4-3 loss to local rival Hi Ar- row Devils. Since then, he said they've had to shuffle players around to unfamiliar positions, that is when they’ve had players to shuffle. ; “There’s not much you can do if people don’t show up” he said. “You can’t put a good squad together when people are he Although the Dynamos re- main winless, Chaves said he saw encouraging signs against Nelson, who scored their second goal in the late stages of the game. “I was really proud of the guys for what they did,” ’ Dynamos’ soccer struggle continues adding that the Dynamos on- ly had one spare compared to Savoy’s half dozen. “It was really encourag- ing.” Across town with the Dev- ils, coach Carlos Amaral said he isn’t pleased with the Dev- ils position in the eight team league. “I’m a little surprised we're in fourth place,” he said. “I was expecting us to be in sec- ond place.” Amaral said with a little luck, the Devils would be higher up in the standings, blaming one-goal losses to both Nelson teams, and a 2-0 loss to Nakusp. Last Monday, the league- leading Nelson A’s swept last place Big O Tire in a double- header, holding them to just one run over both games. The next night, though, the A’s took it on the chin, falling 10-0 to the second place Castlegar Merchants. Thursday, Big O came up big against the Merchants in a 9-1 win. Finally, on Monday, the same two teams squared off again, with Big O coming out, on top again 3-2, the first time they’ve put two wins to- gether this season. Merchants coach Kelly Keraiff said Thursday’s loss was understandable. “Because they’re in last, we might have taken them too lightly,” he said. But in Monday’s game, he said the runners who got on * base ended up staying there. “We got guys on base,” he said. “We just didn’t get the hits when they were néeded.” Big O coach Pete Evdoki- moff said he thinks the two games against the Mer- completing a two game sweep by a score of File Photo chants are an indication of how things will go for the rest of the year. “I think we’ve turned the corner,” he said. “We played better defense than we had for the first half of the season and we hit the ball.” Although last place Big O still has a way to go to catch the Merchants, Evdokimoff said closing the gap isn’t un- realistic. “As I said at the start of the season ‘Any team can beat anyone on any night’ and I stand by that.” The results from Tues- day’s games between the Merchants and Banjo’s Pub and Valley Royals against Nelson were unavailable at press time. uilding since 1979 carpe! 365-00 niry services diting services CALL DALE AT: Gan 9 Fourth Avenue + B.C. Leading the way in the Competitive League with 13 wins in 17 games, coach Ivan Salekin said familiarity has been a key in the T-Birds perch atop the nine-team league. “Our team has been togeth- er a long time,” he said. The T-Birds finished last season with a record of 18-3, but were stopped short of a championship in the playoffs. This year, Saliken said things are a little different. “We're playing better as a team this year,” he said, adding that the team has been able to overcome player losses in its quest. “We’ve lost two of our better players and we're still playing well.” Saliken said a lot of the team’s success has come from the bats of Corey Ross, who is now in Kelowna and Tom Tru- betskoff . ; “Ross and Trubetskoff) are two big parts of our lineup,” he said. “If (Ross) comes in for the wind-up, we'll be competitive.” Heading into Monday’s ac- tion, the T-Birds held a four- point lead over Woodland Park Shell, with Castlegar Realty another two points back. Williams Moving remained on top in the Recreational League with 28 points, one point up on Avenue EHS, with three other teams at 26.
