RIGHT MUST PREVAIL.” At times it appears that wro: g would triumph over right, but the rt eventually win. The trouble between the Recorp and the printers was no fault of ours, ‘Th wer of a few mali- cious men who a: rupalous envagh to use a labor union to accomp ish an unlawful and unjust end, is practially illustrated by the. apparent progress of 14 printers in Rossland. Men who have not, and probably never will pay a cent of taxes have been able to go before the city council and get through a resolution discriminating against the Recorp in the matter of city printing. They have been able to intimidate the printers working at the Recorp office, forcing them to quit work. The earth is rife with the stir of lite, I hear the hum of the bees, And the faint perfume of the apple bloom Comes in on the southern breeze, The butterfly on painted wing Is circling in the air: The woods and fields ’neath the touch epring Are budding fresh and fair, No trace they keep of the winter sleep; ‘The world wakes every year. And the wild birds sing in the joy of spring, Forgetting the winter drear. But never a springtide stirs the sleep In the gravey wird over the hill. The flowers may bloom and the grass may creep, The sleepers silent lie: Dear Savior, when shall the dead arise? The summers come ahd they go; But still they are dead to our anguished cries, Dear Christ, and we miss them so. —Sara_Matthews Handy. ——>__ ‘ New W. C. T. U. Officers, Buffalo, N. Y.,. This office and the citizens of this yicinity are constantly re- ceiving inquiries concerning this section of the country which are difficuit to answer by letter, so the Recorp gives the following information for the beneht of all: Rossland is situated in British Columbia, eight miles from the international boundary line be- . tween Canada and the United States, Itis reached from the north via the Canadian Pacific to Arrowhead, on the Columbia river, from there ty Trail by steamer, and from Trail to Ross- land by tke Columbia & Western railway. From the south via Spokane, Washington, by the Spokane Falls & Northern and Columbia & Red Mountain railways, Rossland has forty hotels, with bars, eating and lodging rvoms, and a dozen restaurants. There are three weekly news- papers and two dailies. All other branches of business are well represented. The popula- tion is variously estimated from 6000 to 7500. Board and lodging at the bo tels, $2 to $3 per day. leals 2. to 50 cents. Furnished ped $2.50 to $7 per week. It is useless to write and ask ifany particular business would pay here. Everybody. .must.be his own judge and take his own chances, While there is not work tor all who iaquire, most sober, indus- tious persons who really wish to work have so far been able to obtain it. We would not advise any man to land here «‘broke” without friends, although many who have done so are doing well. This camp is now éetthng a business basis. is engaged not only working the mines and conducting the busi- ness of the town, but are buying. or bonding and developing min- ing property; buying and eelling real estate; building houses for ‘rental purposes, prospecting and etaking pi tors. Many are here simply looking on in. won- derment. We believe it will go on and on until Rossland can boast of a population of 5U,000. After that it will probably settle down to a proposition of a pay roll but not for a few years. There are plenty of money here from all sections of the globe; but the principal investors are fromthe United States, with Canada largely interested. The history of the camp reads like a fairy tale, and’ the fabulous riche« are scarcely excelled by the imaginary “King Solomon's Mines,” We will not attempt to discuss the mines in «single ar- ticle, aswe have been writing about them for nearly three years and have not been able to keep up with them, ,The ore ship- ments speak for themselves. The town has won an enviable reputation for law and order, It is supplied with waterworks and electric lights. ‘The main street TE MERCHANTS BANK of Halifax. INCORPORATED 1.
