68 CastlegarNews October 20, 1990 Foster parents honored TELEPHONE 365-5210 Oct. 21-27 is Foster Family Week and throughout ‘the country foster parents and their families are being honored for their contribution to the well-being of children in care in their communities. “This is our community's oppor- tunity to thank our foster families for a job well done,’’ said Chris Hopkins, foster parent coordinator for the West Kootenay. “Being a foster parent is a very challenging job that requires an abundance of special qualities such as patience, understanding, tolerance and flexibility. It is especially impor- tant that foster parents be able to view the children that they care for and their families without j ad BUSINESS DIRECTORY New Insertions, copy will be accepted up to 5 p.. m. wan News aha Oct. 30 for ad ee of November. Brian L. Brown CERTIFIED GENERAL ACCOUNTANT 270 Columbia Avenue Castlegar * 365-2151 Hopkins said in a news release. There are more than 100 children in care in the West Kootenay and the majority are placed ith foster families. Children come into care for many different reasons. Hopkins said reasons include ‘‘neglect, physical and emotional sexual abuse, problems making it impossible for the parents to care for the child such as alcoholism or illness, parents being unable to manage the child’s behavior, and being unable to care for a handicapped child.”” “‘Whatever the reason for their being in care all children undergo a process of separation and grieving. Most frequently they don’t even realize that they are grieving. Many are in shock or denial. Foster parents need to be able to gently help these children understand and work through this process,’” Hopkins said. The healthier the foster home, the better equipped it will be to deal with the stress of fostering, she said. To maintain a healthy balance, Hopkins believes it is important to work as a team with all the individuals involved in the child’s life. This team can in- clude the foster parents, social workers, natural parents, teachers, counsellors and child-care workers. And with so many players involved, communication becomes critical, with the focus of planning on the needs of the children. ‘One important aspect of fostering that is often overlooked is the impor- tant role that the natural children in the foster family play in helping foster children. The natural children are crucial to the success of the foster placement. “In reality they’re part of the ‘team,’ a most important part. (They are often the key to helping children in care by being role models and peer counsellors. Their assistance and un- derstanding of the foster children can go a long ways in enhancing that child’s self esteem and feeling of belonging,’’ Hopkins said. Potential foster—parents undergo orientation sessions to introduce parents to a number of key issues to consider when deciding whether or not to take on this challenge. And because fostering is a profession in transition one can expect ongoing training to assist foster parents in developing the skills needed to care for children Human rights activist to speak During the Marcos regime in the Philippines, many Castlegar residents responded to a call to write to political prisoners jailed without trial under martial law.
