LocdlSPORT Steve Junker nent And A Dream Comes - True is unbelievably big. I never really thought of it as in my reach until this summer when I got asked to it. I’m just happy I got this far, but I don’t want to stop now.” — Steve Junker - prior to the National Junior team training camp. Ed Mills SPORTS EDITOR Another dream has come true for Steve Junker. It happened in Kitchener Ont. Wednesday when the 19-year-old Castlegar native learned he had made Canada’s National Junior Hockey team. What that means is that veteran coach Rick Cornacchia and his staff consider Junker one of the best 24 hockey players — and in the top three right wingers — in the country. It also means a trip to Germany where the Canadians will be looking to start the new year with a third straight gold medal at the World Junior Hockey Champ- ionship. “It would be a real thrill for me to be selected to represent Canada at the World Junior Champion- ship,” Junker said when attended the team’s first tryouts in Calgary in August. “So many great superstars have used this tournament as their stepping stone to the NHL, and this is the pinnacle of junior hockey.” Junker will be keeping some impressive company on the team in the likes of Scott Niedermayer, who was selected third overall in last June’s NHL draft, Patrick Poulin, who was taken ninth overall and Martin Lapointe, who was taken 10th overall. Eric Lindros, who was drafted first overall in June, will also be on the team by virtue of the fact that his dispute with the Quebec Nordiques continues and ‘he hasn’t been allowed to negotiate Junker Makes It! with any other NHL team. In total, the National team roster includes 10 NHL -first- round draft picks, three from the second round and two from the third. Junker was drafted by the New York Islanders in the fifth round, 92 overall in June. Junker, who won a Memorial Cup with the Spokane Chiefs in May, said that making the National team would rank right up there with winning the Cup. Junker couldn't be reached for comment Friday at the hotel where the team was staying in Kitchener. Junker was second in scoring on the Chiefs this season with 21 goals and 21 assists in 27 games. The total includes 10 powerplay goals, two shorthanded goals and three game winners. Junker and the team left Friday for Germany, where the juniors will prepare to defend their title with a pair of exhibition games starting today when they play the German National Junior team. On Monday the Canadians travel to Bad Tolz to play a local Division II club. Four members of the team are returnees from last year’s edition — Niedermayer, Lapointe, Karl Dykhuis and John Slaney, who scored the winning goal in Canada’s 3-2 win over the Soviet Union at the championship last year in Saskatoon. Lindros who was named the outstanding forward at last year’s world championship, is going for an unprecedented third-straight world title.
