Castlegar may not have the flash ‘| and glitter of New York or London, but no one can accuse this living, breathing city of being a cultural void. Not with the exhibits that are constantly displayed at the West Kootenay National Exhibition ‘Centre across the river in Ootischenia. “We're quite proud of the exhibits we get at the gallery,” Education Co- ordinator Maureen Stelck said. “We offer a unique cultural experience — and it’s entirely approachable.” f In fact, approachability is a mandate of the centre’s director, Lou Lynn. “Lou has a very definite vision of the gallery, she wants to make it entirely accessible to the people of Castlegar,” Stelck said. And it is. “People often tell us that the gallery gives them a peaceful, restful feeling,” Stelck said, “and have that kind of experience.” Indeed, many folks think that exhibition centres, art galleries and museums are stuffy spots, where the all-too-plastic upper-crust 43 hobnob and exchange recipes that Wednesday to Saturday 365-3401 Rivers Last Monday of every month y 8:90'p-M.t) 380 ain. If that’s what is holding you back Culture in Castlegar? Say it isn’t from going to the centre, think again. “I suggest that people come in and take a look around,” Stelck said. “I think they’ll be pleasantly surprised.” What’s no surprise is that to get a gallery like the National Exhibition Centre in show-shape takes a huge effort. “We put in some very long hours and do some hard work,” Stelck said, “but we still wouldn't be able to run without the dedication of our 20 or so volunteers.” But at times 20 just isn’t enough. The gallery is always looking for more people to help out, regardless of qualifications. ~ “It would be nice to get some people on board to help with the day-to-day problems we face here,” Stelck said. “Carpenters, electricians and so on would really come in handy, but © anyone who is willing to help would be appreciated.” However, you don't have to devote your life to the gallery to get — something out of it. A quick visit will suffice. “Exhibits are changed every four to six weeks,” Stelck said, “so we get quite a selection of work from regional and national artists.” Promotion of regional art is one of the main reasons the federal government decided to build the National Exhibition Centre. “They wanted to establish 42 exhibition centres around the nation, so that regional artists would have a place to show their work,” Stelck said. The idea was that artists would ; show their creations locally, then be able to send them off to other regional centres where they would also have an audience. “But the government ran out of money after only 17 exhibition centres,” Stelck said. “We were very lucky to get one here in Castlegar.” The 13-year-old National Exhibition Centre focuses on artistic, scientific and historic displays, and has a “high-calibre gift shop which enables B.C. artists to have an outlet for their work.” While admission is by donation only, yearly memberships to the gallery are available for $20. Along with four newsletters, invitations to is) at the gift shop, Stelck says members get a “warm fuzzy feeling that they are supporting the arts in the West Kootenay.” So take Stelck’s advice and make your way to Castlegar’s cultural gallery. It’s a lot cheaper than hobnobbing in New York. 4
