They are blamed for everything that is wrong with’ society and I think that is unfair. The teachers are now required to be mother, father and babysitter—and it helps if they also know something about Social Studies. I had the personal opportunity of being a substitute teacher for a few months last spring and I know what the inside ofa “staff room” can be like, Most of the teachers I met were going about their jobas best they could and I aim not so sure anymore that they are overpaid. Since they apparently have the responsibility of out the world's p: lwould suggest that they are grossly underpaid. In fact, it would be well if we did not keep reminding the teachers how important they really are, because we couldn't - afford to pay them the wages they are really worth, Now you know my general opinion about teachers and I will tell you why I hold positive regard for the teaching profession: A lonely old spinster who was in love with her Grade 7 class at Oakland School in Victoria spoke these un- forgettable words to a class that first day back at school: "I want you boys and girls to ask questions .. . of me. I expect you to chalk rything I'say and to question facts and Diversion Tunnel Contract _ For Revelstoke Dam Awarded B.C. Hydro has awarded the first major contract in connection with the proposed Revelstoke Dam project to a consortium of two eastern Canadian companies. -The contract bid price of $35,420,290 for construction of a diversion tunnel and as- sociated work was made by - Pitts Engineering Construction Eastern of Toronto, and Atlas Construction of Montreal, and was accepted by Hydro, Four other bids were re- ceived, the highest being more than $54 million. The contract contains pro- vision for cancellation in the event that Hydro's conditional water licence for the Revel- stoke project should be with- drawn as a result of appeals to the provincial cabinet. If this happened, con- tractors would be compensated for any work carried out up to the time of cancellation, The dam will be built about three miles upstream on the Columbia River from Revel- stoke in an area known as Little Dalles Canyon, Monday is the Day! Valhalla sl ide-Tape Presentation The Valhalla Proposal, spawned by a 1978 study for | future resource management in the Slocan Valley, is a subject which has caused much contro- versy in the past several years, The proposal involves the establishment of a 122,000-acre wilderness preserve that will maintain the natural integrity of the area from the shores of Slocan Lake to the opinions expressed in your texts. I even want you to question historic decisions.” Twas a member of Miss Kinnaird’s Social Studies class and have been asking questions ever since. In all due respects to Bruce Ketchum and others at Selkirk College, it has not made me popular, but I am having fun asking questions and that is why I like school teachers. I like finding out that they don’t have any more right answers than I do. That's why I feel sorry for them. We expect teachers to have all the answers for any of our problems. I would only hope that all schoo! teachers were like old Miss Kinnaird of Victoria because if we have more people asking more questions, it is just possible one of the “students” may, in a mood of serendipity, come up with the right answer. For any teacher that may be reading this opinion, you may be interested to know that the B.C, Conference onthe Family pointed a collective finger at the teaching profession when it blamed the teachers for not instilling a sense of value in students of today. The delegates inferred that most of the social problems, broken families, crime, overuse of drugs, financial unhappiness, ete. were all caused by a low sense of values.in most of the citizens in this province. Values should be taught in the schools. So there you have it, my teaching friends. You have gone full circle. Society as represented by the Conference on the Family has charged you with the responsibility of teaching the Golden Rule. You have been asked to also become clergymen and clergywomen. (Roman Catholic excepted), It might be an exercise for our imagination to see Dr. Pat McGeer as a Doctor of Divinity because, as Minister of Education, he is your “chief”. Now there is another human being, that has my sympathy. Right now I am only capable of feeling concerned about teachers so I will talk about Dr. McGeer some other time. “Let us pray. Recently, at Selkirk Col- lege, Valhalla committee mem- bers Grant Copeland and Rich- ard Caniell made a slide-tape presentation and led a dis- cussion on the subject, with the purpose . of acquainting the public with the project's cur- rent status and its hopes for the future. It is their intent to present the proposal to the present government. If accepted, the preserve would forestall logging efforts in the area. As Mr. Copeland put it, “We must evaluate the benefits and con- sequences of establishing a preserve and weigh them against the results of per- : mitting the area to be logged.” Speaking of the Nelson Forest Service, which wishes to maintain the status quo, he said, “This simply means log- ging, they have not considered - ; the area's recreational poten- tial.” 5 The slide-tape show ap- peared on the CBC show “Kla- hani* ‘this month, National Geographic photographer Dew- itt Jones took the pictures and Richard Caniell wrote and re- corded the taped voice track.
