Presently, parents become: .

cisions only after they have
been made by the board. A
great deal of- confusion and
bad feeling is‘usually the re-
sult.

The parents of this district

are interested and concerned ©

about the education of their
children. They don’t want to
control or run. the school
board, but they appreciate
being consulted on major de-
cisions.

As we move forward from
a restraint period, it is es-
sential we recover the -pro-
grams and services we sac-
rificed in the name. of re-
straint.

I would give priority to
counselling. services, library
and learning aids.

Not only is it important

_that we reinstate for the next
school year the Russian and
French programs for Grade 5
and 6, consideration should
also be given to extending
the Core programs in Rus-

_ sian and French to earlier
years in elementary schools.

There is federal money
available for research in. es-
tablishing immersion
programs in second langu-
ages. This opportunity
should be taken as soon as
possible.

Services and programs
that have been reduced or
eliminated have been parti-
cularly hard on the rural

schools. As the sefvices are

withdrawn parents tend to

move their children to the-
larger city schools that still

retain-some of the programs

and services.
