Paris, he. 6.—The Pans police have
arrested an ex-lientenant of the French

army by the name of Durand, for carrv-| ;

ing on an illicit correspondence witha
foreign government, involving military
wecrets.

Tho affair came to light through the
collapse ofa bridge over the river Loire
and the upretting ofa loaded mail car.
For several Gaya the mails werein the
water, and when they were recovered
the addresses upon many of the envel-
opes were illegible. It was necessary to
open the letters, and the operation re-
vealed Durand’s correspondence.

On searching his apartments the po-
lice found and eeized a number of pho-
tographe of French fortresses and other
defensive works.

Durand was discharged from the army
two years ago.
