Castlegar News June 28, 1989 anadians tighten money belts OTTAWA (CP) — Atter years of a credit binge, Canadians appear to be putting the brakes on their fate of borrowing, Bank of Canada figures indicate The rate of growth in personal loans by the country’s chartered banks slowed to 8.8 per cent in the first four months of this year, a decline from last year’s growth rate, said Derek Jones, an economist with the Canadian Im perial Bank of Commerce The rate of growth on a seasonally adjusted annual basis — for all of last year was 14.6 per cent, figures submitted by the chartered banks to the central bank show We may be in the midst of a change and are seeing the first indications of it,’ Jones said this week.
