These pouches require - extra equipment to be used. Milk cartons, indeed the, milk bottles of years ago, serve as their own pouring jugs. Not pouches. They need .small sharp-pointed knives or pairs of _ scissors and pitchers of special design. Then you need special in- structions. This in itself fs too much—the instructions don't even come on the package. But what is worse, the instructions given by the dairy industry on television don't work! For example, this morning al breakfast, my daughter | asked for a glass of milk. Rather than say no, I put one of the infernal: pouches into the specially-designed: pitcher and cut the pouch corner off. I. was careful to avoid slooshing the milk over the glass. . - \ But instead, the milk dribbled. down the front of the pitcher. There is no way I know - to avoid this beyond straight luck. But. now the residual milk can absorb the other vapors in the refrigerator and sour. My wife-was at a check-out counter a day or so ago and overheard a man requesting a refund for two pouches that had deaked. Afterwards the check- out. girl commented to another girl that she hoped they (ie. you): would. get rid) of the ‘ pouches—she was tired of paying. refunds ‘for leaky pouches. One last thing, my wife notices a different taste, some- thing’ like a cheeze flavor. or maybe a “plastic”. taste. It's worse al some stores than at others. You may wonder why we continue’ buying the pouches if we hate them so much. My wife and I both work, so the times we have to shop are somewhat restricted. In consequence, when we get to the slore, there often: aren't any. carton. con-_ tainers left. ie was. exactly zero unit price change with the intro- ducion of pouches, presumably pouches cost the same as cartons for packaging so the cost doesn’t enter the argu- ment.) When the only alternative . we see Lo pouches is nothing at all, we are not yet prepared to take nothing at all. But we cer- tainly explore the possibilities. J.D. Hydro recovered during the third quarter of the current fiscal year from a loss position of $17.1 million re- porled at the end of the second quarter, and had net income of $4.5 million on Dec. 31, 1976. At the end of the third quarter of. the previous year, on Dec. 31, 1976, the loss-was $35.9 million. ~ This information was in- cluded: in an interim «report. covering the nine-month period from April 1 to December 31, 1976, issued last week by Hydro chairman R. W. Bonner. Mr. Bonner. said improve- ment in the financial results arose from control of costs and staff levels, a substantial in- crease in sales volume, and rate increases for certain classes of customers, He said gross revenues for the period increased by $110 million over the same period of the previous year, reflecting an improvement in the economy. Expenses rose by $70 million. Mr. Bonner. pointed out that B.C. Hydro has been in- formed that a subsidy of $32.6. million’ will be | forthcoming - from the provincial government to help cover: losses in the public. transportation system, This subsidy and a similar one received in March 1976 are not reflected in the net income figures for the period covered by the report, Major portion of the in- crease in gross revenue, $91 million, came from a 27 per cent - increase in electric revenues. This included $15 million from export of surplus power to the United States, when an availa- ble market south of the border coincided with a period of sur- plus. water in Hydro's reser- * voirs following favorable spring |’. and summer run-offs, Revenues of the gas and transportation services in- creased by 20 ber cent and nine per cent e Bervineet ig The World Day. of Prayer is sponsored in‘CaYiada by the Women’s Inter-Chiirch Council of Canada, whichis located in Toronto.
