The statement came after the Red Cross said it was conducting a program to trace blood donations sus- pected of being tainted with the virus which causes ac- quired immune deficiency syndrome. But Dr. Penny Ballem, deputy director of the Red Cross, said that blood was donated before AIDSscreen- ing began in October, 1985. None of it remains in the system. “This blood has either been thrown away or it was trans- fused some time in the past,” Ballem told a news con- ference. She said half the 64 sus- Two others who tested positive are hemophiliacs who may have been exposed by other program deals with blood units “col- lected several years ago, not related to the current blood supply. “It's a public health mea- sure, it's a responsibility of the Red Cross to carry it out to make sure that anyone at risk is informed and tested,” he said. “The current blood supply we feel is very safe (with) no evidence of transmission of AIDS at the present time since testing went into place.” Experts say river lucky to be alive VANCOUVER (CP) — En- vironmental experts say the Cheakamus River is lucky to be alive as BC Rail crews clean up last week's huge sulphur spill north of Squa- mish. An estimated 200 tonnes of sulphur was dumped into the salmon and steelhead river Friday when 16 train cars derailed. “We certainly are lucky they weren't carrying a cau- stic chemical,” said Bob Rey- nolds, district conservation officer for the provincial En- vironment and Parks Min- istry in Squamish. “The Cheakamus is such an important salmon and steel- there's a hatchery on it downstream (of the spill site) and there are all those steelhead fry in the river. It would have taken years to bring it back.” Reynolds said the sulphur cars tumbled into a long, deep pool and most of the sulphur is either on the bank or has settled to the river bottom. He said the sulphur is in- ert, and won't turn into sul- phurie acid unless the piles on the river bank are left to sit in the rain for a long time. Reynolds said BC Rail is working on reopening the line first and hopes to have the tracks back in operation by Friday. Glen Carlson, a habitat % biologist with the provincial environment branch, agreed the sulphur doesn't pose an immediate threat to the Cheakamus fishery. and now you can, too! CosNewsPhoto by Sur Ratton Bonds produce windfall OTTAWA (CP) — Fears that this year’s Canada Sav- ings Bond campaign would be cut off quickly produced a windfall for the government, the Bank of Canada said Tuesday. “There was some economic advantage to the government Canada,” said Pierre Brule, an official with the bank, which handled the bond ign for the gov- told bond buyers during the first days of the campaign that they could not postdate their cheques to Nov. 2 be- cause the sale could end sooner. The reason for that fear was the plunge in interest rates after the stock market crash a week earlier sud- denly made the bonds, which were paying nine per cent, an ernment. How much of an advantage is not clear, he said. However, Tom Delaney, an adviser with the Consumers’ Association of Canada, said buyers of Canada Savings Bonds probably lost in total about $8 million in interest by paying for the bonds before they were earning interest on them. Delaney, a Toronto finan- cial affairs consultant, said the Bank of Canada has not only a moral but a legal obligation to refund interest it earned from funds raised before Nov. 2 the day the bonds began paying interest. However, that’s apparent- ly not how the game is played. Some institutions, worried that sales would be cut off before the payment of in- terest on the bonds began, Celebration. . Since the institutions were forwarding the money at the end of each day to the Bank of Canada, it meant the government was getting money for the bonds, and earning interest on the money, up to a week before any interest would be paid on the bonds. But it was unintentional and the bank acted quickly to halt it, Brule said. The Bank of Canada sent out notices at the end of the first day of the five-day cam- Paign to institutions selling the bonds that it would accept any cheques for bonds as long as they were dated no later than Nov. 2. The institutions were act- ing with the very best of in- tentions, said Brule. In past years it was buyers of the bonds who made a little extra at the govern- ment’s expense, he said. Five inside postal workers suspended SASKATOON (CP) — Five inside postal workers have been suspended by Canada Post for a total of 70 days for activities related to last month's 19-day strike. The national office of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers will decide this week whether to launch legal action over the suspensions, said John Fehr, national chief steward. The suspensions took ef. fect Sunday and Monday. Neither union officials nor and style at HAIRLINES During our Grand Reopning . Let us help you feel glamourous and beautiful! GRAND RE-OPENING SPECIALS Canada Post spokesmen would say exactly what the alleged activities were or give out any further details about the suspensions, in- cluding the names of those suspended. Susan Dennis, president of the Saskatoon local of the postal workers union, has notified the corporation she will file a grievance. But she said management refused to accept grievances on the issue and would only view the union's concern as a complaint, which does not have to be heard by a third party, as grievances are. Dave Byas, Canada Post's spokesman for Saskatche- wan, said hearing concerns as complaints is the first step in the grievance procedure be- tween two parties — a way of avoiding arbitration. Dennis said the suspen- sions are being studied by the national executive, which is‘ compiling a list of dis- ciplinary actions by Canada Post since workers were leg- islated back to work in mid- October.
