The theme for the July 9th program was Wet and Wild and as the children in this pic- ture can attest, it was just that. Sponge tag, water relay races, jello paixiting (no hands please) and a tug of war over a pool full of mud were among the fun drenched activities which marked the day. A vis- it in the afternoon from the fire department helped every- one clean up their act. A special thanks from all the kids and the SVRC goes to the Passmore Fire Depart- ment for helping make a day which will be remembered for a long time. Wi Expected departure of councillor has Coalition Unaccepting Rash Bureaucracy waiting in the wings Neil Rachynski NEWS REPORTER Marilyn Mathieson is expected to resign her seat with Castlegar city council. The News has learned that Mathieson will be relocating to the Lower Mainland with husband Stuart, following his job transfer to Vancouver. Mayor Audrey Moore says, “nothing is final until she offi- cially resigns her seat.” Moore declined any further comment, saying the status of the council seat rests entirely with Math- ieson. Mathieson, who is in the Lower Mainland apparently pur- chasing a home, was unavailable for comment Tuesday. The expected departure of Mathieson has some people eye- ing the vacant seat. Mike O’Connor says the Coalition Unac- cepting Rash Bureaucracy is preparing a candidate for what _is likely to be a fall byelection. “We'll call a meeting and ask everybody if they’re interest- ed,” the citizen group’s president said. “We'll then decide amongst ourselves who would be the best.” Mathieson leaving city council O’Connor says he’s excited at the prospect of providing some stimulating discussion at the city’s meetings. “If we can get a member of CURB on council that isn’t afraid to go up to Mayor Moore and say ‘No, I don't buy it’ then that will help a lot,” he said. “CURB doesn't want to go in and destroy council, we just want to provide openness.” Mathieson’s departure from Castlegar does not necessari- ly mean a departure from city council, however. Section 80 of the Municipal Act states, “after the first election... an elector whose name appears on the list of electors... is qualified to be nominated, elected and to hold office.as a member of the coun- cil of that municipality, city or district, or any other munici- pality or regional district.” Mathieson is expected to return from Vancouver Thursday. O’Connor Said he has mixed emotions about the prospect of a vacant council seat. te “It makes me happy we're going to have a position open,” O’Connor says, “and on the other hand it makes me sad that we'll be losing a good member of the Castlegar community.” O’Connor says he is already looking at two or three poten- tial candidates, but declined to say who. Hel (Mathieson) drops the bomb in September, we’ll be ready.” MILITARY SCRAPS PLAN FOR ARROW LAKES INVASION, PAGE 3
