If you're travelling by car, take your pet for a test drive before the trip to check for motion sickness. If he is ner- vous, your veterinarian may recommend a tranquilizer. Some species — cats, birds, fish, mice, gerbils, hamsters, lizards, snakes and rabbits —- just don’t travel well, and would probably be better off left at home in the care of a friend or neighbor. But if you must take them, it is always wise to check with your vet before taking pets on a long trip. Regulations for traveling to the U.S, with exotic pets should be checked with U.S, customs. Dogs For short local trips don't worry about vaccina- tions. If you're going to a dif- ferent part of the country where your dog will be exposed to unfamiliar dis- eases and pet populations, vaccinations are a must. Be sure rabies shots are up to date as well. In a car, bring food and water and make fre- quent stops. Never leave Fido alone in a parked car, espe- cially on hot days. Walk him frequentlytand always keep him leashed. Cats If your cat is nervous ask your vet about, tranquiliz- ing him for the trip. In a car, keep the cat in a carrier and provide food and water, Rabbits In a car or plane, keep rab- bits in a larger carrier with food and water available at all times, Provide a sipper bottle and lettuce (for its liq- uid content), Rabbits suffer heatstroke easily, so never leave them alone in a car on a hot day.
