Tens of thousands of people have been detained since the military takeover of September, 1980, the report said. Turkish. press reports last year suggested that nearly 180,000 people had been held at some stage since then. The Amnesty Interna- tional report says that the arrests and allegations of torture are inui PENTICTON (CP) ‘These days ‘in the Okanagan Valley, you're wise if you stay ‘on your -toes> You're even wiser if you cover them up when, you go frolicking through the tall grasses. The reason is that you're more likely to come face-to- fang with a rattlesnake ma- king a bee-line for the sprinkler on your front lawn. And nobody needs to be told who wins that argument. A doctor at the Penticton * regional hospital says staff have treated a record num- ber of rattlesnake bites in the valley this year. Six people have been initiated in what Dr. Robert Offer says can be a mighty painful experience. The number may not seem high, but consider that only 15 people have been treated for rattlesnake bites in the last decade in the valley, said Offer, an internal medicine specialist, in a recent inter- view. The most recent two vic- tims were bitten July 21 and spent four days in hospital. One mee that the hot “weather and a rainless month is drawing snakes out of the bush to more settled areas in search of water. But the doctor added that in “the majority of cases, people have only themselves to blame for being bittén. “In most bites, people have been molesting snakes. In 10 of those (15) cases, they were actually picking them up.” ‘Two people have died from rattler bites in the Okan- agan's written history. One who died in 1981 had con- sumed a large amount of al- cohol, which may have ex- acerbated the effects of the bite, Offer said. Another vic- tim was a schoolboy in near- by Vernon about 30 or 40 years ago. Ed Lacey, former manager of the Okanagan Game Farm, said: “The snake needs water the same as-you and me and he’s going to come looking for it. They may travel seven to 10 miles from: their dens.” If they're smart, people won't walk around without shoes and the tall where snakes often’ travel, Lacey said. “At ‘least make yourself known. The snake will try to _ get away, but if he is cor- nered he will turn around and fight.” Offer said if someone. is bitten they should keep calm to reduce the amount of adrenalin in their system, which can heighten the ve- nom's effects. “They should keep quiet and peaceful as they can and walk out of the bush and go to hospital by car.” The most immediate effect of a snake bite is anxiety, which causes the person to breathe faster. Within min- utes, the venom marches up the arm or other bitten limb causing severe swelling and bruising, he said. In at.least 25 per cent of the cases, the snake hasn't © even injected venom into the wound. At the same time, the grasses “hero” can end up giving the . injured person a nasty infec- tion. by introducing human bacteria into the open wound. Even if the venom did en- ter the easily recognizable fang puncture wounds, suck- ing or excising will remove about 10 per cent of it at best. And the hero can end up with an unjust .reward — badly swollen lips and tongue when the venom contacts those tis- sues. What does help is local- izing the venom by applying a light tensor bandage to close off the lymph system around the wound ora light tourniquet that slows blood circulation slightly. Offer has even simpler ad- vice though: “Just leave the poor animals alone.” ~ Clothing sold to Third World PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Two officials of a used- clothing export firm pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges they paid off Salvation Army officials for a steady supply of garments. Dating game hits the road NEW YORK (AP) — The .dating game has hit the road in the United States with a growing number of singles in clubs using bumper stickers to advertise and licence plate to blish contact. The 76-page report points out that. many former de- tainees will only talk about their experiences after they have left Turkey — usually in secret. One of the testimonies re- ceived by Amnesty Interna: tional since the report went to press was that of a lawyer detained in March at Istanbul Police Headquarters and the Selimiye Military Prison. He said he had been hung by the hands, given electric_shocks and hosed with high pressure cold water. But Amnesty Interna- tional says it knew of hun- dreds of allegations of tor- ture which have not been in- vestigated. The report says that_in view of the “solid evidence” of torture over the years the Turkish. government-“should act now to stop it.” It called on the authorities to imple- ment measures to combat the use of torture. “Among these,” the report said, “should be safeguards to ensure that. incommuni- cado detention does not be- come an opportunity-for tor- ture.
