No. 7956 The Kootenay School. of Writing and the Canadian Council are sponsoring an eventful visit to Nelson by play- wright Frank Moher which will coincide with the opening night of Odd Jobs, written by Moher and on tour with Theatre Energy. To begin what might be called “Frank Moher Week,” he will give a dramatic reading of recent work at the SUB, 711-10th Street in Nelson on Saturday. The public is weleome to this event which is free, although donations to the Kootenay School of Writing, a non-profit, volunteer-run society, are appreciated. Moher was born in Edmonton and spent his formative years there, winning the Alberta Culture Playwriting competition with a play called Damn You Shakespeare. He was 15 years old at the time. He went on to study playwrighting with Bev Tarver at the University of Alberta as well as attending the Banff Centre. He became associate Playwright and literary manager at Edmonton's Northern Light Theatre. He wrote more award-winning plays: Pause, Down For The Weekend, The Broken Globe, Stage Falls, Odd Jobs, Sliding For Home, and Third Ascent. Several of these plays were later adapted for CBC-TV. Moher also writes for radio. A true “theatre beast,” Moher has spent many hours on Moher’s workshop on Sunday is called Offstage Colla- borators. It will be of special interest to actors and writers as it will focus on theatre collectives generating scripts, writing from improvisation, and incorporating historical and contemporary research into scripts for the stage. This approach to producing theatre that is committed to a community is exemplified by Theatre Energy and other collectives across Canada. “Writers have a responsibility,” Moher said in a recent interview in the Edmonton Bullet. “A writer must chaltenge people . . . I don't see playwrighting as a form of self-ex- Pression. It's important that I give expression to the community. I think that is valuable.” There are limited seats for the Moher workshop, for which pre-registration is a must. Following the public reading and the workshop is an opportunity to see Theatre Energy perform the opening show of Odd Jobs, directed by Meredith Bain Woodward on Monday at Lee Hall, the music and theatre building wing at L.V. Rogers Secondary school. Moher will attend this performance and end his visit to the Kootenays with a free public reading at Selkirk College in Castlegar on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. - Supplement to the Castlegar News of Castl ICBC PREMIUMS © 100% FINANCING OUR SPECIALTY © NO PAYMENTS FOR 90 DAYS © WE FINANCE COLLECT 365-2155 OMCMLXXXVII Leon Shatter Goinick © TRY US. Watkins will be at the Castlegar United Church this Friday at 8 p.m. In con- junction with her talk, she will be screening a new Nat- ional Film Board release about the Eritrean conflict: The Forgotten War. Admis- sion is free. Watkins is on a tour of various parts of B.C. to speak about the famine and what can be done about it. “The critical problem is in the areas held by indepen- dence movements in the northern areas of Ethiopia,” says Watkins. “These areas contain 60 per cent of the potential famine victims, yet they are receiving only 10 per cent of the foreign aid.” the people who need it the most,” says Watkins. “What we need is more material to send in.” The needs in the indepen- dently-held territories are 200,000 metric tonnes of grain in Eritrea and 400,000 metric tonnes in Tigray. Only 105,000 metric tonnes have been pledged or received in these areas to date. “Unless there is a massive response directly to these areas, there will again be mass starvation as there was in 1984-85,” says Watkins. “The solution to the famine problem in this area will only come when the fighting stops,” says Watkins, “In the meantime we must get food and supplies to those who need it most by whatever Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker 1127-4th Street, Castleger ", the relationship of ige) and Dr. Ehrili been ST.
