CASTLEGAR NEWS, December 24, 1980 Pension cheques should be in hand VANCOUVER (CP) — British Columbia's handi- capped will get their pension cheques early again this year, a human resources ministry spokesman said. Computer error was blamed for the pension cheques already issued — but dated Dec, 29, No one in the ministry had thought to tell the computer about Christ- mas, Don Karaskewich, a spokesman for the handi- capped, said the month-end cheques would have meant gather on the front lawn of Human Resources Minister Grace McCarthy's home. On hearing of the prob- lem, McCarthy promised the cheques will be exchanged at district offices and new cheques dated Monday will be hand-delivered to the handicapped by Tuesday. She explained ‘the han- dicapped payments had been lumped together with other ministry programs in one massive computer system — which was given no back- ground on Christmas when it was pr d 10 months that many h would have gone without their Christmas dinners be- cause of the delays. He said in the past the cheques always came before Christmas, Karaskewich threatened to mobilize Vancouver's han- . dicapped community to go. “We never thought of Christmas, frankly,” said Bert Tichelman, director of management services. Karaskewich said he will be at McCarthy's door Christ- .mas Day for his Christmas dinner if the cheques don't come through. Facing Christmas without homes NAPLES, ITALY (REUTER) — A month after the earthquake that claimed at least 2,900 lives, tens of thousands of people in Naples and devastated inland towns and villages are facing Christmas destitute and homeless. About 40,000 are said to be without homes in Naples itself, although some officials believe many who live in one-room slum apartments called bassi are merely pre- tending to be homeless in order to obtain somewhere decent to live. Hundreds of people have occupied about 150 schools to press their demand for hous- ing and the schools system is paralysed, with students of all ages staying home or wandering the streets. (CP) — You might call it fiddling while Rome burns, but Har- vey McMichael has his 1,700° Christmas lights up again this year. * It's been eight years since the Sarnia Hydro Com- mission began to encourage energy conservation by dis- continuing its ‘Christmas lighting contest. And it’s eight years since McMichael last won the prize. But his $1,000-display is still flashing as it has been for the last 13 Christmases. Along with the rainbow of lights are a life-size Santa complete with sleigh, rein- deer and speakers broadcast- ing earols. McMichael says he and his wife receive dozens of calls from people who have stopped to see the display. In spite of the i: ments and local gangsters, ealled camorra, have been demanding protection money from the illegal occupants, police said. Thousands of buildings were damaged in the quake, but virtually no repair work has started.
