Gary Maloney's November 14,1990 Castlegar News c3 CASTLEGAR SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATES Joanne Baker Tony Guglielmi My name is Joanne Baker. My husband, Harold, and I have two teenage daughters, Treena and Lori, who attend Stanley Hum- phries secondary-school. I have been actively involved for the past 12 years in the parent groups at Woodland Park elementary, Kinnaird Junior secondary school and SHSS. For the past year I have been the district liaison rep to the B.C. Confederation of Parent Ad- visory Councils. This involved at- tending the “Parents as Par- tners’’ leadership conference and annual general meeting. 1 was the guest speaker at all district. schools regarding the rights and responsibilities of parents in the new School Act. Other activities include being a member of the organizing com- mittee for the West Kootenay Parent Advisory workshop held in June 1990; a parent rep in the accreditation process at SHSS; and included on an interview team for a school principalship. I was part of the original group JOANNE BAKER that was instrumental in bringing co-op housing to Castlegar. I ser- ved several terms on the board of directors at Woodland Park Housing Co-op in treasurer and vice-chairman positions. For the past 10 years, I have enjoyed being a Brownie leader please see BAKER page D4 best of my abilities and I thank you, Castlegarians, for the op- portunity to serve and for the support received. Over the five years I have con- tributed = much i within our school district. I have made a significant contribution to the formulation of, and was helpful in the signing of, the first collective agreement with our teaching staff. | have motivated and formulated policies, procedure and practices that in- vite greater public and employee input into the running of school board affairs, such as the mission and goals statement. I have worked with dedication and at- tended regularly the commitees 1 have served on. I have listened to your concer- ms about (tax increases and allocation of funds. I have regularly attended meetings -of parents groups and listened and acted upon requests made and concerns expressed. I have visited schools regularly. I have motivated changes and spoken out openly and sincerely on issues of wide public conern. I have been present, attentive and active because I care. please see GUGLIELMI pege D4 Bonnie Horswill Mickey Kinakin My name is Bonnie Horswill. I have lived in Castlegar for 18 years and graduated from Stanley Humphries secondary school. I have two children, and because of their schooling became in- volved in the Castlegar Primary Parent Group (chaired for three years); District Parent Group, and Parents for Russian (three years); District Parent Advisory Council (four years); and Education Forum (parent rep for one year). I have taught catechism for seven years and have served three years as a Girl Guide leader in the area. To ensure our children are prepared for the rest of their lives, we must build to last a lifetime. We build with the qualified staff and teachers that motivate, encourage and develop a want and a need to learn in our children. All the parts of our “‘building’’ must be able to withstand time: the primary (our foundation), the elementary (our supports), and the high school (our roof). BONNIE HORSWILL In most areas I think we’re doing what we should, but there are some flaws we must correct. Our elementary students and teachers are crowded into classrooms with 30 students. This is not an educationally sound situation. Every year for the past three or four years, our board, please see HORSWILL page D4 I am running for the position of school trustee for Area I. I believe that education is priority No. 1! How well we educate our children will determine how weil our society does in the future. Education is an investment in our common future. To train our children for the future, we must build programs and services today. I have been a school trustee for three years and have helped build some of these Programs and services. Rapid advances in technology and transportation are forcing us to live in a “‘smaller’’ world. Our children are not just citizens of the Kootenays, they are citizens of the world. Foreign languages are the key to living in this ‘‘smaliler’’ world. | am a strong supporter of language programs and have worked to expand offerings in both Russian and French. Much of our district is made up of rural areas. The school ser- ves as a community focus in these areas. | have moved the motion to reopen Ootischenia.school as a MICKEY KINAKIN district facility and Blueberry Creek school as a community school. Tarrys elementary school is in Area I. I strongly support this school and if elected will work for the retention of this school and the expansion of services for its students. please see KINAKIN page D4 CASTLEGAR SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATES Nina Koodrin Beverley Maloff In my eight years of in- volvement in the Castlegar school district, | have worked for the right of parents to receive ac- curate information to enable them to make the best decisions for a young child’s education. I am proud to see ‘the parent groups and the District Parent Advisory Council that we have. We now have our rights legislated in the ministry and our views and opinions are heard on board committees. We have come a long way. I'd like to thank the many supporters that phoned. Some people stated their confusion as to the variety of candidates. For the many parents who asked, I thought I'd pass on some hints. These are not all the things that make a quality trustee but they are a start. Choose a person who has been involved in parent groups, had district involvement, or attended mectings outside the school. Check the depth of volvement. Has the person been chairman, submitted reports, or deah with the board, superinten- dent, principal and teachers? Check the track record. Has the person been consistent? A person who has jumped from here to there is one who is not sure of himself. NINA KOODRIN Take note of promises made. Generally, it is the realistic ones that indicate the realistic trustee. Talk to people about the person and then take a concensus. Check the conduct and behavior of the person. If the person is known to be harsh or abrasive to deal with, remeber it could be you next. Check to see that the person can stand his or her ground. When the heat comes on, they don’t run. Check to see if the person is “‘clean."" See that the person please see KOODRIN page D4 As a mother with a child in Grade 4, I have long-term com- mitments to the Castlegar school district. 1 graduated from Stanley Humphries secondary school in 1962. My husband, Larry, and I have been married for 26 years. 1 have always been working with children and in my teen years was Cub master, My community involvement has included: board of directors secretary, Castlegar Community Services; board of directors treasurer, Kootenay Columbia Child Society, and treasurer of the United Church Sunday School. At present, I am chair- man of the Twin Rivers Parent Advisory Council, a member of the school district's com- munication and planning com- mittee and treasurer of the Castlegar and District Junior Sof- tball Association. I was on the second language committee which recommended late French immersion, core French and core Russian to Grade 4 and extension of the Russian bilingual program. | am employed as an office ad- ministrator with the Kootenay Columbia Child Care Society. B.C.’s public education school system is for all students. Our task is to ensure all children are treated equally and fairly. In BEVERLEY MALOFF Preparing the students for the Year 2000 and beyond, we must continually strive to educate our children in a meaningful way, with a balanced outlook of life and world in general As a trustee, I will work towards long-range planning. 1 will investigate the feasibility of opening up Blueberry Creek school along with moving the Grade 8 students to Stanley Humphries. I believe that parents of those children should decide whether they are in favor of these changes. please see MALOFF page D4 I've Made A Difference Pro-Education Choices Open accessible board Languages Special needs support Sports programs Support for teachers Parental involvement Fair and reasonable For School Trustee VOTE — ITURN ER Gordon FOR CITY ALDERMAN * Availability © Experience ° Integrity © Commitment CALDERBANK Albert Ss.
