Rebels Rebound W@ Rejuvenated juniors win three straight under new head coach Gord Walker Ed Mills SPORTS EDITOR Just when fans were getting ready to exercise the Castlegar Rebels’ right to die and pull the plug on the junior team, the Rebels awoke. If not totally alive and well, the Rebels are atleast kick- f ing in the Kootenay In- ternational~ Junior Hockey League. They proved it last night in Beaver Valley with a 6-5 overtime win over the West Division leading Nite Hawks. And they proved it last weekend by beating the Nite Hawks and East Division leading Spokane Braves in back-to-back games at the Community Com- plex. The wins ended the team’s horrendous 11- game losing streak and give new coach Gord Gord Walker spite missing four regulars from the lineup, including second team KIJHL all-star Chris Sannutti. Ross said some of the credit for the Rebels’ wins has to go to Kevin Koor- batoff, who worked hard at getting the team in shape in his winless seven- game stint as coach of the club. But Walker is undoubtedly the cat- alyst of the revitalized Rebels, he said. “Gordie, himself, is a really ener- getic type of guy and I think: it’s sort of rubbing off. He’s so energetic that I, personally, just get out there and I just want to go go go,” aid. feel the team is re- sponding to him. “The whole key to success is their work ethic, and they proved to me that they’re ready to work hard every shift. They did really well and they should be proud of themselves,” Walker said Walker said there was no question the Rebels needed a jump start. Walker a perfect record since he took over the club last Thurs- day. Team captain Corey Ross said it’s like the team has been pumped with a 1000 volts. “We're more excited, more energetic and things just feel alive more than normal,” Ross said. Ross said ‘this may be the turn around the club and the fans have been waiting for all season. “It could be. In the dressing room it feels absolutely great, it’s so positive in there now, it’s unbelievable.” Mike Hunter completed his hat trick with the overtime winner for the Rebels, while Kevin Dewar had two goals and Derek Lalonde the other. The Rebels beat the Nite Hawks de- “They needed a change and myself walking in there was maybe the change they needed. But whether it was me or somebody else, I think they needed someone to work hard for.” _ Sannutti and Kevin Nisse were in the stands last night serving the first game of three-game suspensions each were handed for separate spearing in- cidents against the Nite Hawks in Sat- urday’s game. “Dustin Rilcof was out of the Rebels lineup with a knee injury, while Jason Switzer, who just joined the club last weekend, was recalled by the Vernon Lakers, the Rebels’ parent club in the BCJHL. The Rebels play Friday in Nelson against the Maple Leafs. Talk to us today. °
