Minor Hockey -- Where the ac ion By FRANK'DERBY Sun staff writer Atom It was a good, hard played game and the Castlegar team vhought they had a win, but Trail tied it up 3-3 on a brilliant indi- vidual effort by Dallas Stanton with just 20 seconds left. Jay Antignani got things going quickly for the local AllSturs with a goal 16 seconds after the open- ing face off. Brad Abietkoff and Cory Quiding assisted on the play. With an apparent nack on this day for scoring last minute goals, Trail knotted the score 1-1 at the 19:30 mark of the first period. Castlegar retook the lead in the second with Antigoani showing that his slump is over by scoring again, assisted this time by Scott Carlson and by goaltender Reed Buyers who had an outstanding game in nets. ‘Trail tied it up again before David Bell scored Castlegar’s third goal * from Carlson and Cory Quiding. Ryan Biller and Wayne Markin were solid regulars.on defense while Ryan Leckie was moved back there from his normal center position part way through the game to provide support, Brad. Bartsoff and Eric Perrier provided dynamic forechecking and Ryan Davis in a similar role had a breakaway but just missed the far post. Ryan Davis impressed as a Senior Novice player brought in to fill out a lineup that was missing a few players, The Atoms’ next home games are both at the Complex - Feb. 23 at 3:45 against Beaver Valley and Feb. 24 at 11:00 am yes Grad Forks, iS Bantam. Jan Dudley scored Castlegar’s ony goal against Nelson with.Fred Gienger picking up the assist. On Sunday, the goaltending of Jacey Moore was the only thing that prevented Trail’s score from : going into the double digits, Ken Skibinski showed some hustle with a goal and two assists while Pat Biln and Jan Dudley got the other markers and Shawn Mosby assisted on Skibinski’s goal. Kolle faced, 62 shots including 11, in overtime before Dale Bonderud popped home the winner on a nice set up from Remi Lavallee, . The 2-1 margin in shots on goal was indicative of Grand Forks’ dominance on the ice, but with the help of a couple of goal posts ; Kolle denied them the win they cs Were looking for to keep pace with “Nelson, “Grand Forks is a fast team and they were just flying out there , tonight,” said Kolle. “I depend on + my quick reflexes and good glove down for some > time ‘after a goal mouth collision, “I was just buying some time,” explained Kolle. “We only had a. ‘dozen skaters including three midgets and we needed a breather.” Jeremy Thompson opencd the scoring near the end of the first period for the Rebels with assists going to Corey Ross and Jarod Beck, Kyle Sunderman tied it up in the second and the score remained tied 1-1 through most of the third, Then with just under 2:00 minutes left in regulation time, some of the people in the stands began heading for the exit when Darcy Brichuk put the Bru- ins ahead. Those who had made it as far as the lobby were brought back when the crowd roared with Lavallee’s goal just. 25‘ seconds ', hand, but what made the: differ- }! ence, was my concentration out later, setting the stage for Bon- derud’s heroics. After, the second ‘period, ‘conch Ed Cooper who thinks Lavallee has one of the hardest and most accurate ‘shots in the league sug- gested that he pass less and shoot more. Lavallee clarified the strategy. “He [the Bruins’ goalie] is good but he gives up rebounds and a lot ; of them come back out front.” On Friday night, also at home, goaltending and concentration was again the difference. On this par- ticular night, Rebels’ goalie Lorin - Healy just didn’t bave it as Castle- gar lost to Nelson 9-2. Healy got'a piece of most of the shots that were scored against him, but sev- eral just trickled through the five hole, Things. were looking good at the end of the first period as the teams went to the dressing rooms tied.2-2.Corey Ross scored mid- way through the first, assisted by Dustin Rilcof and Dale Bonderud, Dave. I’m hop- ing that next week I can tum this job over to you folks. Ley With respect to the NHL, I wonder what teams Castlegarians may have :, tadopted to support as their own. Virtually smack in the middle between ¢ Vancouver and Calgary I would assume that those two teams would be * obvious choices. Vancouver has two Kootenay boys in Greg Adams and * Steve Bozek and is the B.C. team. On the other hand Calgary is a winning team. Let me know which is your team, and why. The Canucks just fired coach Bob McCammon and G.M. Pat Quinn has jumped from the frying pan of his office into the fire behind the bench.. To improve the team he will have to come up with some smoke and mirrors magic. He has to improve both the offense and defense, par- ticularly the specialty units - the power play and the penalty killing. ‘What do you think Quinn should do while wearing his coach's hat as opposed to his general manager’s hat. What can he do with the bodies be has that McCammon couldn't or wouldn't? No trades heré, just coaching Strategy. Let me know. Do we | eed to attract more sporting events to Castlegar - dog racing, horse racing, car racing, frog jumping, tiddly winks championships ? Do we have the facilities to attract new events or can we create them ? t mc know. I’ve been asked to list NHL standings and stats, but our commitment to local coverage makes that difficult to.do. Because of printing complica- tions our back section deadline is Sunday so we can’t put them there - by the time you read them Wednesday they would be out of date. The front section is maybe half a page lately so there just isn’t space. Space limita- tions and features also means even some local events don’t get into print, sometimes even after covering games in person. However, I’m sure there are people out there who can come up with some constructive criticism for the sports section. Let me know. What I'd like to do next week is use this space to reflect your views on local or ii I, amateur or sports. of the best responses will be printed so please print your name as well as sign the let- ter so you can receive proper recognition for the wisdom you're prepared - to share.
