The finaJs of the Rossland slow pitch softball season ended Sunday with playoffs. AD teams in the league entered with each team playing every other team. This was designed so the only team 888Ul'ed of a home game in each playoff contest was the team finishing on top of the regular schedule standings. The Royals, sponsored by Branch 14 won the right finishing the season on top. AB it turned out they lost only one game during the playoff, to the team from the Orwell Hotel on Sunday morning at Cook Avenue Park. In the afternoon the action moved on to Jubilee Park at the High School and there the Royals beat the Spartans, then in the final beat Target Auto Body, who despite the fact that they finished the regular league schedule in last place, proved to be tough in the playoffs. The final augers well for the continuation of slow pitch on a regular basis. Lots of bits and some sparkling plays in all the games I watched for guys who are supposed to be over the bill as far as ball-playing is concerned. During the waeekend we enjoyed a visit from our oldest son Rick. He is now back in Broots where be acts as administrator for the Medielne Hat College. During the past six months be bas been at University of Victoria to take the first part of a course to fit him for bis job, of public administrator. He tells us be got through this section with Oying colors and will take the second and final section at the University of Calgary as be does not want to uproot bis family again to go back to Victoria. This next section will give him full public administration qualifications. It was good to see bim again and maybe later on we can make a trip down to Brooks to see Peggy and the kids as well. The Retirees Day on Tuesday was a fine bright • day at the upper course and the guys bad a ball. I didn't get to play this week since I didn't feel up to par having bad a big weekend and the festivities were still banging on. Anyway, we got it going and with Bart Dudley and Al Dixon in charge it sta~ to work out pretty well. We bad 57 on band and some very good competition was held. The boys played low gross, low net, closest to the pin on No. 5, long putt on No. 9 and a couple of bidden boles. In the low gross department, Sam Anselmo bad a 39 and in the low net Tim Jenkin came in with a 33, Bob Miller was cl08e8t to the pin on No. 5 while Bill Batiuk won the long putt on No. 9. The bidden bole for low as No. 8 and Jim B u ~ came in with a winner and the high was No. 1 which was won by Mr. Beckett, Bart didn't remember bis first name. We do not have to bave the score, suffice to say it was big enough to take the prize and after all, that's what we are looking for. Apparently, according to wbat Bart tells me there is some question regarding the ,rinners in some categories. I feel that we do bave a bit of a problem but it isn't something we can't live with. There bas been some questions regarding this and Sam Anselmo and Ferro Pellegrin bave offered their services in this respect. There is no doubt that we could use help and since these two came (orward, I'm all in favor of accepting any help we can get Ob, by the way, if you can do the desk next week, I think we would be grateful for your help. After this bad been typed I thought about something which I follow pretty closely. It is the topic of discussion wherever one runs into ball fans and I get into the odd lively conversation with regard to the relative merits of our two Canadian teams. I am slightly swinging in favor of the Expos, but those BIile Jays bave some terrific bitting from Bell, Barfield alid Moseby with another by the name of Mt'Giff, who are doing quite well. Meanwhile, the Expos don't seem to be suffering too much. They haven't the bitting for power but they are holding up pretty well overall. Now as they move on towards the fall maybe things will fall into place. Time will tell! So, until next time then!
